But if you were in the gym watching Hoop Salem 17U last weekend at the Hoop Madness Spring Showcase, you wouldn’t think that the steady 6-foot, 175-pound point guard had any rust. Caolie was playing as if he were in a varsity game just yesterday as he really hasn’t taken any time off since last donning a West Linn uniform.
“I’ve just been working out and getting in the gym as much as I can, just working on getting better every day,” Caoile said. “I’ve been doing skill work and working on my shot – I changed my shot this off-season – and getting stronger, more athletic. I’m mostly focusing on getting better and getting ready for next year.”
Speaking of next year, Caoile went into detail about what his plans currently are. “I’m going to a prep school next year, Nation International Prep,” Caoile said. “They’re on St. Lucie Beach (in Florida) and they’re a good program that get their guys to school. There are a lot of colleges in their gym and they go like two or three times a week. They have a high-level schedule too. Their coach really likes me and wants me and I’m excited to go there. It’s going to be working every day, and that’s all I want.”
Caoile connected with Nation International Prep via former Rainier High School and Portland State standout Brandon Cataldo, who played AAU basketball a decade ago for Caoile’s father, Richard. Cataldo now does international scouting for Nation International Prep, but it was the domestic connections between him and Caoile that got the two in synch for next year.
While the plan is to head to Florida, Caoile noted that he’s keeping his options open in the event something recruiting wise comes along in the spring. He’ll play things out with Hoop Salem 17U in the event anything happens. “I’m just trying to have fun as I haven’t played in awhile,” Caoile said. “I want to get used to playing basketball again before I go out to Florida next year.”
Caoile currently ranks as the #15 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
