After a standout senior season at Mountain View High School, the steady 6-foot-2, 185-pound combo guard made some college campus visits to get a feel for what the next level for him might look like. As he sorts that part out, McClain took part in the Northwest Shootout on Saturday and it was a great chance for him to show off his stuff one last time as a prep player.
“It was a lot of fun and I really liked being able to be a part of a group of all of the best kids in Oregon,” McClain said. “We were able to learn off of one another and play, have fun, and compete. We were all competitors, all on one team trying to win. It was just hard because they have so many athletic kids and they are all going D-I. It was all mental honestly, just because they are D-I doesn’t mean we can’t play to their intensity or anything. But that’s just how basketball is.”
Individually, McClain had a solid outing. He seemed to fit in with the fast pace of the game well and offensively, he was able to knock down a couple of threes while also showing great change of pace by hitting a couple of pull-up jumpers and finishing strong at the cup. He finished the game with 13 points and five rebounds on 5-for-10 shooting, 2-for-3 from three-point land.
The next step for McClain – where he’ll be playing at the college level. He notes that he has a scholarship offer from Central Washington but he’s also considering Division III options such as Linfield, George Fox, and Whitman.
“It’s going to come down sooner or later,” McClain said. “It’s going to come down to schooling because I’m looking at going into chiropractic and how the team is and how they roll things out, what their structure is, and how their team is.”
As he continues to sort out the future, McClain can look back on the past with fond memories. He led the Mountain Valley League in scoring at 23.8 points per game and he had a good time getting things done. “I just wanted to try and make it the best season ever,” McClain said. “At the end of the day, I just had a lot of fun with it.”
McClain currently ranks as the #13 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
