The versatile 6-foot-8, 190-pound forward has moved on from the disappointment of how the high school season ended and is now anxious to get things really going with AAU ball as he and his Rose City Rebels 16U squad get ready to hit the big time tournaments this spring.
“Our team is really good and we should have a good summer on the EYBL circuit,” Gregg said. “We have a bunch of talent at every spot and we’ll be tough to beat going into the summer.”
The Rebels have gotten off to a great start so far with a couple of tournament titles at the N.E.T.S Showcase in Seattle and the Nike Hoop Summit Spring Showcase in Beaverton the past two weekends. At both tournaments, Gregg has shown some great offensive aggressive, both taking the ball strong to the basket as well as hitting shots from long range.
“I want to improve my effort and my conditioning,” Gregg said. “I want to go as hard as I can without getting tired. I also want to work on my defense.”
One thing Gregg is looking to continue doing is capture the interest of college coaches, as his recruitment continues to hum along. The schools who have offered already continue to be in contact, he’s also started to get some correspondence from some new schools – notably National Runnerup Texas Tech – and more could be yet to come.
“Basically the same schools have been talking to me,” Gregg said. “Hopefully that will change when coaches start coming to our games during the live period.”
As all this develops, there will be a significant change for Gregg. He confirmed that he and his family have decided for him to leave Columbia Christian for a new school – one that’s literally a stone’s throw away from home. “Next year I’ll go to Clackamas,” Gregg said. “It’s tough to leave as there’s a great coach in Bart Valentine, but it’s an easier commute because I live right by Clackamas High School and playing 6A competition will be huge for me.”
While his time at Columbia Christian has come to an end, he can look back on this past year in a positive light. While the Knights weren’t able to repeat as 2A state champions, Gregg did earn co-Player of the Year honors in 2A. “It was a good year for us,” Gregg said. “We had some good pre-season games that we showed what we could do like in the Les Schwab. We came up short in the championship game but it was all good. It was a learning point.”
Gregg currently ranks as the #2 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
