Recruiting Report: Mark Williams (2020)
Mark Williams, a class of 2020 post prospect from Norfolk Academy, is one of the best rim protectors you will find in the country, and is truly still just beginning to unlock his full potential. With offers from schools in every high major conference in the country, coaches covet his length, ability to consistently contest or alter shots, and ability to finish around the basket at a high level. While Williams is still growing into his lanky 7-foot-1 frame, his mobility has improved along with his skills and overall confidence.
“I think I’m moving better. My footwork and agility have improved,” said Williams. “I’m definitely scoring more. Being more assertive, more confident. It’s not really a skill thing in particular.”
While he doesn’t model his game after anyone in particular, Williams is a fan of Joel Embiid.
“He’s my guy. I like his footwork, ability to hit the three consistently, and he’s just a funny dude.”
One thing that might be overlooked about Williams’ overall game could be his passing. It’s something he’s always had. He sees the floor pretty well, and is generally unselfish.
“I’m good at making the decision of whether to score or kick it out to my teammates because I know they’ll knock it down.”
Williams is currently working on getting stronger, but knows that it’s a process. He believes he’s gotten stronger over the past six months or so, and we’ve seen evidence of that in the early part of the spring.
“Just continuing that, being able to guard all five positions, and then probably creating my shot off the dribble a little bit more.”
When asked if there were any schools he was currently favoring, Williams said:
“No, I think everything is open right now.”
What are his goals?
“Definitely to play in the NBA. That’s definitely my main goal. College-wise, just going somewhere that is the best fit for me knowing I can go to the next level from there. Not necessarily a big-name school, but if that’s what it is, then it is what it is.”
Williams has an older sister, Elizabeth, who played at Duke. She went on to be a top-five pick in the WNBA, where she has since been named an All-Star and the Most Improved Player. What advice has she offered to her younger brother, who has similar aspirations?
“Just to enjoy it. Don’t be stressed about it, just play. It’s just basketball.”
Boo Williams EYBL has one of the most talented starting fives you will find in the country, and Williams has been a key piece to their success in the early part of the spring. If he excels this weekend in Atlanta during the live period, don’t be surprised to see his recruitment continue its expansion.
