Anwar Gill, a class of 2019 guard from Gonzaga, certainly fits this profile. During a recent interview with Prep Hoops, Gill described his mentality heading into the spring and touched on his goals among other topics.
PH: How does winning the WCAC Championship give you confidence heading into this spring?
AG: “It gives me a lot of confidence. I know I can win at a high level now. That’s basically what I got from it. Now I can bring that leadership and winning to this team. And I think this team will go far. We’re a deep team, everybody on the team can play at a high level. I’m excited about this team and what we can do.”
PH: I’ve heard that Coach Torrey Farrington has had a big influence on your overall game. What does it mean that you’ll have the opportunity to play for him this spring?
AG: “I’ve worked out with him my whole high school career and middle school. This is my first time getting to play for him so I think that’ll be cool. I think my game fits his playing style. He likes to get up and down.”
PH: What does he want to see from you?
AG: “He said he wants me to be more of a vocal leader and when I’m open shoot threes with confidence. He really wants me to show that I can shoot threes. I think that’s what people think my flaw is. He also wants me to have the ball more and be more comfortable with it. He thinks I’m going to be a point guard in college so he wants me to show the coaches that I can handle at a high level. Also guarding the point guard, picking up full court at a high level.”
PH: Defense is definitely one of your strengths in my opinion. How much value do you think it adds that you can guard not just the point but wings as well?
AG: “Its a good asset. I don’t think too many people can do that. I’ve always been working on my defense ever since I was young, and it’s paying off.”
PH: Which schools are standing out in your recruitment right now if any?
AG: “Not really any right now.”
PH: What are some goals you’ve set for yourself?
AG: “Just to improve, get better, and get high level schools interested in me. I think I can be a high level combo guard.”
