Recruiting Report: 2019 HoopMIA All-Star Game
Joshua Scott, Sam Griffin and Brian Dugazon — all fresh off helping their squads to FHSAA state championships — headlined practice Thursday night for Sunday’s HoopMIA All-Star Game at Immaculata-La Salle High in Miami.
The HoopMIA All-Star Game will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Scott (pictured above) helped lead Blanche Ely to its second consecutive Class 8A state title; Dugazon led Stranahan to its first 6A state crown; and Griffin won it all in 4A as Westminster Academy 3-peated.
Among other Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade county senior prospects selected to play Sunday: Vernon Carey Jr., University School (Duke); Damari Monsanto, Western (East Tennessee); Chase Johnston, Westminster Academy (Purdue-Fort Wayne); Toru Dean, South Miami (Barry); Marcus Montalvo, Westminster Christian (Ave Maria); Toumani Camara, Chaminade-Madonna (Georgia); Shane Hunter, St. Thomas Aquinas (Nova Southeastern); Dante Wilcox, Oxbridge (FIU); and Chris Spenkuch, Miami Norland (Louisiana-Lafayette).
The 6-foot-5 Scott has already visited Palm Beach Atlantic. “I have to take some visits next week,” Scott said Thursday. He plans to check out Miles College in Alabama, West Virginia State and Eastern Florida State.
Issad Solano (main picture): The 6-4 SLAM star has been offered by JuCo Miami Dade and has an offer from FIU as a 2020. Kent State, Albany State and NC Asheville are showing high interest. Solano said he really likes Kent State and Albany State. Of college coaches, he said, “They like my defense. How I control the game. How I pass the ball. I make my team better.”
Justin DeBuck: The 6-foot Pembroke Pines Charter guard currently does not have any offers but he said Palm Beach Atlantic, Regis, Johnson & Wales and Palm Beach State have been in contact. “I want to go the JuCo route so Palm Beach State” leads for DeBuck. “I like Martin McCann’s coaching style,” DeBuck said.
Brian Dugazon: The speedy 6-foot Stranahan PG has offers from UNC Asheville and Albany State and interest from FIU, St. Thomas University and JuCo ASA. “I really want to go to FIU … stay home,” Dugazon said. “Whatever is the best spot for me, I’ll go.”
Jordan Hernandez: The Miami Killian 6-3 SG/SF is headed to Life University in Georgia. He had also been talking with Valdosta State, Georgetown College and Shawnee State. Hernandez was at Coral Reef before going to Killian his final year.
Alec Rodriguez (above): The Miami Belen Jesuit 5-9 guard says he is down to deciding between four schools: Case Western in Cleveland, Ohio; Catholic University in Washington D.C.; Hampden-Sydney (Va.); and Fordham (N.Y.). “My parents are really interested in a preferred walk-on at Fordham,” Rodriguez said. “May 14-20 we’re trying to go visit. Around that time.”
Edward Bailey: The 6-2 Miami Booker T. Washington guard is looking for his first offer. “I’m a great listener,” Bailey said. “I’m a team player. I shoot the ball very well. I can play defense. There is a lot I bring to the table.”
