Only a small group of people – one being his high school basketball coach Jeremy Parrott and the rest being his family – knew where he was heading to. So on the first day of April, Glover announced his pledge to the University of Florida, giving the Gators their fifth commit for the 2019 class.
Glover joins point guard Tre Mann (Villages Charter School), small forward Scottie Lewis (Ranney School), centers Omar Payne (Montverde Academy) and Jason Jitoboh (Hamilton Heights Christian Academy).
Florida’s 2019 class currently ranks second in the Southeastern Conference and No. 6 in the country on 247Sports.
Glover’s decision to commit to the Gators was, sort of, easy because his family has followed the school for a long time, and Glover, himself, has followed the school’s men’s basketball program since he was a kid, but Glover had to take a moment to think everything through before making a final decision.
“It’s always been one of my family’s favorite teams, so to be able to play for a family’s favorite team is always big,” said Glover, whose father, Lennon Glover, is a big Florida Football fan. “After the state tournament, I really started building my relationship with the coaching staff. That was really big. But it was really hard for me to choose Florida, even though that’s the school I have always wanted to go to.
“It was hard to choose Florida over some of the schools that had been recruiting me for a very long time, but once I got the offer from Florida, it felt so right, and I felt wanted by the coaching staff, and some of the players that have already committed,” said the senior point guard, who grew up watching former Gators Scottie Wilbekin (2011-14) and Chris Chiozza (2015-18). “It just felt like home.”
Florida International University, Western Kentucky, Western Carolina, Samford, and Middle Tennessee State University were some of the schools that were really coming for Glover’s services before Florida came in to seal the deal.
The bond between Glover and the Gators started to grow increasingly last week when head coach Mike White and associate head coach Al Pinkins called coach Parrott for a lot of game film from the 2018-19 high school basketball season, which included Bearden’s matchup against Mountain Brook in The Lighthouse Classic and the Bulldogs’ 3A state championship game against Memphis East. Pinkins flew in from Gainesville, Florida to Knoxville, Tennessee to watch Glover workout, and the 6-foot-1 point guard admitted “that went really well.”
Glover can now shift his focus to what’s next for him and while he does that, there’s one notion that’s a guarantee: He will be playing against former high school teammate Drew Pember, who committed to Tennessee, next season and possibly the following three years.
When Glover talked to Prep Hoops, he mentioned he and Pember haven’t talked about facing one another in college just yet.
“That has always been Drew and I’s plan to either play together or play against each other a few times at the college level,” Glover said. Now that the dream has really came true, I hate we have to play against each other and not together, but it happened like that.
“I can’t wait to do it. We really haven’t started talking trash yet, but I feel like it’s going to come eventually.”
