Prospect Update: Casey Mumm (2021)
As a role player with one of the state’s best teams last season, Casey Mumm continued to show he can be one of Iowa’s most effective point guards.
Mumm, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, was quicker than ever before this past season, and it showed on the defensive end. His high motor was a big reason the Little Cyclones enjoyed so much success.
“This year, I really stepped up with my defense, I was a lot quicker this year and I had a lot of steals and would bring energy to the team. Also, I thought my shot later in the year really improved,” said Mumm. “And I’m always looking to find my teammates and make the extra passes, that’s something I like to do.”
Not only did Mumm lead Ames in steals last season, but his 2.83 steals per game was the best among all Class 4A sophomores. His defense was essential to the Little Cyclones making it to the state tourney.
“It was definitely a great experience and I’ll remember it for a long time. We really picked it up at the end of the season and that’s when we made our run,” said Mumm.
Three of Ames’ starters in that state tourney will be back next season, and the sixth-man, too. Mumm says the team could be just as good next season.
“I’m definitely looking to take on more of a leader role next season, I’ll need to score more and be more consistent, but keep the same intensity and effort, and I feel like we’ll be just as good next year,” he said.
This spring and summer for 16U, Mumm will again play with All Iowa Attack.
“Mainly, I’m just hoping to have a fun time, obviously,” he said. “But also getting to the championship games of our tournaments so we can be seen. And just working hard and playing hard for the following season.”
