Prospect Update: Bryce Coppock (2020)
Even though he only just recently wrapped up his junior season, Newell-Fonda guard Bryce Coppock can already be found in the Iowa high school archives among all-time Iowa scoring greats.
This past season, the very lengthy 5-foot-10 guard poured in 28.2 points per game for the Mustangs, he scored 676 total. During his three year career, he’s up to 1,562 points, rendering him the leading active all-time scorer in Iowa and setting him nice nicely to perhaps join an exclusive 2,000 point club next winter.
We got a chance to see Coppock live and in action this past weekend at the Super 16 in Ames, and as is always the case when we see him, he did not disappoint. Coppock scored a tough 30 points against a tall and long Iowa Prep 17U squad, albeit in a loss, but did so while being double-teamed and trapped for almost the entirety of the second half.
His striking length certainly helps him to deceivingly get off shots over taller opponents, and his ability to handle the ball and to shoot it — especially tough shots — is what makes him a cut above the rest.
Coppock has been loyal to the Tryon Gym program throughout his high school career, and he certainly makes that 17U team formidable.
We caught up with him after that game on Sunday, and he mentioned that all the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) schools have been reaching out to him. He also mentioned Eastern Illinois had invited him to a camp.
Coppock is not only a star on the hardwood, but in the classroom as well. He sports a 3.95 GPA and told us he’d be taking the ACT this coming weekend. He mentioned Ivy League schools Brown and Penn had reached out to him.
He’s on the smaller side (5’9/5’10), and he plays at a small school, but Coppock is without a doubt a guy that programs from all levels will want to check out this summer.
