At 5’10, Washington is a well-rounded guard with good quickness and the ability to score the ball. While he’s not a selfish player, Washington can score the ball when necessary. He has a quick first step to get by defenders, can shoot the 3 and is at his best in attack mode, going down hill and getting to the basket.
Washington averaged 12.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game and knocked down a team-high 36 3-pointers.
Derby is coming off a tough run in 2018-19 and they saw three starters go out and finished the season 7-15 overall. The Panthers capped the season strong despite earning a No. 15 seed, Derby knocked off a No. 2 seed in the opening round of the postseason by 36 points, then lost by five to Lawrence Free State.
“Our record wasn’t the best but we had a lot of close games lost multiple games by two or less points,” Washington said. “I felt like I had a good year but I coulda been more aggressive. …”
Washington is running with NLHA Gaddis and says he is looking to improve on the defensive end of the floor.
“I also want to start using my shot more off the dribble mid range and 3,” he says.
Washington says his favorite basketball memory was in 2008 when Kansas won the national championship behind the play of future NBA players Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush and Nick Collison.
“That’s when I started to love basketball and knew I wanted to play and the same year the Celtics won the title … so yea that was a good year for me.”
A fan of Kyrie Irving and Auburn guard Jared Harper, Washington says he has taken various aspects of both players game and tried implement it into his own.
“I love watching Kyrie Irving,he’s my favorite player,” Washington says. “I don’t think I could ever really do exactly what he does on the court, but I try sometimes.
“I also like watching little quick guards like Jared Harper for Auburn — he does a great job of driving and kicking and finishing at the basket.”
Also a football standout, Washington says he had heard from several colleges for both sports, including invites to camps and junior days, but has not yet drawn an offer.
