The all-around 6-foot-3 guard from West Salem High School had previously played with Oregon-based AAU teams in the past but this year he’s trying something new. Scoggin is playing his club basketball out of state and he feels it’s the path that will help him achieve his goals with his college recruitment.
“I’m playing for California Select out of San Diego,” Scoggin said. “I heard that Chris Dudley and DJ (Gay) were the coaches, so we got ahold of them, I went out there to their tryouts and made the team. Those two coaches are known well and I thought I’d pick up some things from them. I just really want to be seen as I haven’t gotten much exposure outside of Oregon. I’ve been to a few camps here and there but I really haven’t been to any of the big tournaments and you really have to go there to be seen and this is really the first year of doing that.”
California Select is playing on the adidas Gauntlet silver series and played in their first tournament a couple of weeks ago in Thousand Oaks. Scoggin is looking forward to more action with his squad and his hopes are set high when it comes to how it will help his college recruitment.
“My motivation is to go to a good D-I school,” Scoggin said. “I figure I have the talent but I’ve just got to play good enough and figure out some things and I’ll be there. (The college coaches) will be there if I just show up and play. Really, I want to have a good relationship with the coaches and have a good fit to have a good experience going from high school to college. I just want to have a good time playing basketball at the next level.”
Scoggin had a solid junior season at West Salem after participating in the Prime Time Top 40 in the fall. He averaged a team-high 22 points per game this past year and is hopeful it’s a building block for him and his teammates for next season.
“I feel like we should have gone a little further but it was a learning process and we did pretty well with what we had this year,” Scoggin said. “We had a lot of young guys in key positions but I felt like we figured out a lot and we set ourselves for a good year next year. We’ve got to keep on moving forward. My ability to get open shots was mostly what was going good for me.”
Scoggin currently ranks as the #37 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
