It appears he’s used the experience gained to make a significant impact with his AAU team, the 6th Man Warriors. Gamble demonstrated one of the best defensive performances we saw at Spring Jam Fest. He took four charges in one game, which is almost unheard of in most AAU settings. Gamble discussed his thought process towards taking charges and much more during a recent interview with Prep Hoops.
PH: You took four charges today by my count. What inspires you to put your body on the line?
CG: “I think that’s something that’s emphasized at Sidwell so much with Coach Singletary. That’s something he preaches every day. It’s something the seniors preached this year. Sacrificing your body for the team. We couldn’t score so I figured, we’ve got to slow them down somehow. They were out of control, didn’t know how to stop, so I just had to step in there.”
PH: How does guarding someone like Jason Gibson in practice or open gym prepare you to play defense at this level?
CG: “I think in terms of point guards, in the next few years I might not find someone who is as shifty and can shoot like he did. So I think it was really good experience matching up with him. It taught me how to turn the ball-handler and close out on shooters.”
PH: What do you think is the next area for improvement in your game?
CG: “Mid range, three point shooting, and finishing over big men. Using different types of floaters, different type of hook shots, stuff like that.”
PH: What are your goals?
CG: “To win the MAC. We came up short this season. Also to win DC again if we can. Also just to be a leader.”
PH: How are you doing in school?
CG: “I’m doing pretty well, A’s and B’s.”
PH: What do you think you can bring to a college program down the line?
CG: “Defense. Guarding quicker point guards. I’m a bigger guard, so I can defend and lock up smaller guards. I can also bring driving and pull-ups.”
