Iron Mountain earned a hard fought win over a game Detroit Edison squad in one semifinal. The final score was 60-57. Across the bracket, Pewamo-Westphalia topped Erie-Mason by a score of 60-45. This set up an instant classic for the state championship. The 2 teams went toe to toe throughout the game. While the ending was controversial, it didn’t negate the fact that 2 great teams in Division 3 were going at it. Pewamo-Westphalia squeaked out a 53-52 win and brought the state championship back to their school.
There were alot of talented players on the court in Michigan’s Division 3 high school basketball this season. The 2018-2019 Division 3 Player of the Year and the Honorable Mentions all had truly special seasons.
Player Of The Year
Jalen Terry (2020, PG, Flint Beecher)
Terry was nothing short of magnificent this season. He led Flint Beecher to a 23-3 record, ending in a quarterfinal loss to Detroit Edison. Terry averaged 22.5ppg, 7rpg, 5.7apg, and 3.6spg. Throughout the year, he proved to be one of the most dynamic lead guards in the midwest. Terry attacks the basket and creates of the dribble. He’s one of the best finishers in Michigan and uses his elite athleticism to play above the rim.
Honorable Mention
Trevor Boers (2019, PF, Capac)
Boers was a post player that did it all, handling the ball, to shooting from the perimeter, to controlling the paint.
Austin Brown (2019, Madison Heights Madison)
Brown was a prolific scorer for regional finalists.
William Dunn (2020, F, Quincy)
Registered 13 double-doubles this season.
Reece Hazelton (2020, F, Maple City Glen Lake)
He continued to be a force with his ability to take advantage of almost any match up.
Caleb Hodgson (2019, C, Dansville)
The CMU commit may have been the top big man in Division 3.
Marcus Johnson (2020, PG, Iron Mountain)
He became Iron Mountain’s all time leadibg scorer in a fantastic junior season.
Luke Laketa (2020, G, Hanover Horton)
Laketa is steady as can be and a leader for a very talented Hanover Horton squad.
Joe Liedel (2020, G, Erie-Mason)
He’s a sharpshooter with no limit on his range and a quick release.
Xander Okerlund (2019, SG, Maple City Glen Lake)
Okerlund has become more than just a shooter displaying ball handling skills and improved defense.
Earnest Sanders (2020, G, Flint Beecher)
Sanders was excellent in transition, both dishing and finishing.
Andre Smith (2019, PF, Pewamo-Westphalia)
Smith was the go-to scorer for state champion Pewamo-Westphalia.
Brian Taylor (2019, G/F, DEPSA)
Taylor showed D1 athleticism and an efficient offensive game.
Foster Wonders (2021″ G/F, Iron Mountain)
Wonders showed all season that he’s one of the top sophomores in Michigan.
