Continue ReadingThe IHSAA just released their new classifications for Boys’ Basketball and it has some impactful changes. We laid out our guesses this past winter with what was likely in the pipeline and now most of those have come to a realization.
New 4A Teams:
Marion – Moving Up
Crispus Attucks – Moved Up
Gary West – Moved Up
New Haven – Moved Up
Culver Academies – Success Factor
Quick Notes: With 4A, you have some old powers moving back up in Marion and New Haven. They have been back and forth before and this is just their two years to be back up. However, Gary West and Crispus Attucks have seen a legit rise in numbers that will put them right in the thick of it in 4A. Culver is another new addition based on their success the last two seasons.
New 3A Teams:
Connersville – Moving Down
Indianapolis Shortridge – Moved Up
Bishop Dwenger – Moving Down
South Bend Clay – Moving Down
Jay County – Moving Down
Indianapolis Washington – Moved Up
River Forest – Moved Up
Oak Hill – Moved Up
Monrovia – Moved Up
Speedway – Moved Up
Eastern Greentown – Moved Up
Quick Notes: 3A has a ton of moving parts and some for the better. Bishop Dwenger is a team that does much better in 3A and has been a bit of a powerhouse at that level. Connersville is one that could also be the same. They were difficult to play at 4A, should be even more so now. Indianapolis Washington and Shortridge are other schools that saw a rise in attendance due to the closing of other IPS schools. Might not be helpful for them. Oak Hill and Monrovia might be two schools that will be hurt by moving up as well.
New 2A Teams:
Western Boone – Moving Down
Southridge – Moving Down
Blackford – Moving Down
Southmont – Moving Down
Fairfield – Moving Down
Rensselaer Central – Moving Down
University – Moved Up
South Central – Moved Up
Westville – Moved Up
Riverton Parke – Moved Up
South Bend Career – Moved Up
Marquette Catholic – Possibly Staying
Blackhawk Christian – Success Factor
Quick Notes: 2A has the most movement in this set of reclassifications. They get a bunch of winners, though. Southridge and Blackford look to be the biggest beneficiaries of this. But, State Champion Blackhawk Christian is now up a class and they should be just as good in 2A. Marquette Catholic, if read correctly, is still in limbo as they sort through a new proposed rule where they could stay in 2A even though they might be able to go back to 1A. Look at University as a loser in this change as they could have been a top contender in 1A next season. Should still be good but 2A is quite a bit tougher in the Indianapolis area.
New 1A Teams:
North Daviess – Moving Down
Covington – Moving Down
Lighthouse Christian Academy – New Program
Quick Notes: 1A has the least amount of changes with only 3 newcomers. Both North Daviess and Covington will enjoy this move and they should be in contention to be ranked to start the season. Covington, could be a sleeper pick to win 1A next year. Lighthouse Christian will get it’s first chance in the tournament now that they are through the probation period.
