These type of events are always fun, because we get a chance to see shoe-sponsored programs go up against competitive independent programs with something to prove. In the end, it mostly came down to the battle of the Nike shoe programs. *Under Armour and adidas teams were playing in their respective league’s events
15u: 50 teams participated in the 15u division and 32 of those teams were in open bracket. Portland’s Rose City Rebels and Seattle’s Rotary EYBL squad faced off in the final as many anticipated. Both are Nike programs and the good ol’ Portland versus Seattle rivarly was relived. Rose City Rebels jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead and never looked back. 2023 PG Jackson Shelstad was impressive for Rose City in their 66-49 victory. He displayed tough shot making ability time and time again from the mid and long range. 2023 SF Marquis “Mookie” Cook was another expected star in this game due to his size, athleticism and ball skills at 6’5. Although just 8th graders, these two will be players to watch for years for come.
16u: 55 teams from Northern California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho were in the 16u event. The final came down to the 2 EYBL teams once again, with Rose City taking on Seattle Rotary. The Rebels’ 16u team is definitely one of the bigger 16u teams on the west coast with multiple players over 6’8. They ran a tough 2-3 zone versus Rotary and kept most of their activity away from the basket. In the end, Rose City came out on top by a score of 65-52. 2021 6’8 F Kaden Perry (Battle Ground HS in WA) was very impressive with his communication on defense and activity in the paint for the Rebels. He had one monster left-handed/one-handed put back dunk on a one-step vertical leap. 2021 6’9 F Ben Gregg (Clackamas HS in OR) showed off his versatile skill set coming off of ball screens at 6’9. He has a slick handle and good shot making ability. It is worth noting that much of Rotary’s core 2021 kids play up on their 17u team, but the matchup between Rose City and Rotary 17u next season will be very fun to watch.
17u: Seattle Rotary 17u EYBL made their 2019 debut and and took home their first championship of the season. 2021 6’9 F Paolo Banchero (O’Dea HS in WA) played with a maturity beyond his years and showed how he can dominate when he chooses to do so. He does a great job of balancing his own scoring and keeping his teammates invovled. Rotary trailed Idaho Select 20-23 at the half, but got things going in the second half with 2021 6’1 PG Nolan Hickman and 2021 6’5 F J.T. Tuimoloau, both of Eastside Catholic HS in WA, getting into a high pick and roll. Nolan makes good reads coming off of screens and J.T. uses his 270 pound football frame to set hard hitting picks. Idaho Select had a hard time stopping this action, but still fought to the end. Rotary would win 62-51. *Featured image
