In most cases, the best and most exciting teams have a dynamic duo that feed off each other and have the ability to overwhelm opponents. While some teams can lean heavily on one superstar player, the squads who have a pair of game changers are the ones that can typically have the most staying power and potential for deep runs. Here is a quick highlight of some of the best tandems that were on display at the Select Super 16’s in Paducah, Kentucky last weekend.
Chauncey Hughes/Kinyon Hodges – SEMO Elite
SEMO Elite rolled to a 17u championship behind this talented duo of unsigned seniors who also teamed up at Cape Central during the high school year for an historic run that included knocking off undefeated Sikeston. The chemistry between the two is undeniable and they are both prospects capable of taking over a game at any time. They are both athletic, can jump out of the gym, can light it up from the outside, and they love to defend and get out in transition. Throw in versatile wing Chase Brown and you have the makings of a team that will see a high level of success this spring.
Jamal Anderson/Marquan Dean – Memphis Bulls
Jamal Anderson is a high level prospect that can absolutely fill it up and continues to catch the eyes of scouts and coaches across the region. Make no mistake about it, though, he is not alone. He has a talented running mate in Marquan Dean. The lean and physical guard is a strong slasher and finisher that buried some clutch threes including the game winner in overtime against Cape Elite. These two are a solid pair of leaders for a deep and hungry Memphis Bulls squad.
Devon Barshow/Sofara Rasas – Arsenal
We are really looking forward to watching Arsenal more as the spring progresses. They have an impressive tandem in 6’5 athletic sharpshooter Devon Barshow and 6’5 electric highflyer Sofara Rasas. The two complement each other very well on both ends of the floor. Their length and athleticism gives Arsenal a tough defensive look and when these two get out in transition, have your cameras ready.
Lamont Jackson/Tim McDonald Jr – Woodz Elite (Moore Flex)
Lamont and Tim are a very intriguing guard tandem that play quite well together for a strong Woodz Elite team out of Arkansas. They both bring great length and athleticism to the floor on both end, and they both have the ability to score and contribute in a number of ways. The chemistry is developing early. Lamont made several impressive cross-court outlets that usually went to a streaking Tim who beat his man down the floor.
Greg Wells Jr/Ben Carroll – SI Select
Disclaimer: It was extremely difficult to narrow this team down to two guys. They are deep, talented, and have ten or so guys who can takeover and have a big game. That said, in terms of consistency and ability to adapt and perform regardless of who else is on the floor these two stood out the most. Greg is a strong left driver who has the ability to heat up from three. He is also a very willing passer that gets his teammates involved and plays with intensity on the defensive end. Ben has the ability to adapt and mold his game to different positions regardless of who else is in with him, and that allows the team to maintain continuity and flow on both ends of the floor.
