UnderArmour in Kansas City and adidas in Dallas are two other events heavily considered for these three All-Star Teams. EAB 17u star Keon Johnson, the best prospect in Tennessee is pictured above.
For 17u teams, including Class of 2021 players on them like Kennedy Chandler, J Lawson, and Alden Applewhite, here are the Prep Hoops Tennessee All-Star Teams:
17u First Team
MATTHEW MURRELL
WILL PRUITT
KENNEDY CHANDLER
KEON JOHNSON
MARCELLUS BRIGHAM
Matthew Murrell (G), Team Thad 17u
There are times when Matthew Murrell is the best player on the floor. Those times are happening more often this month. Explosive athlete. Newly invested in defense. Can defend the 1-2 at high major college level. Always a reliable outside shooter. His offensive game continues to expand. Arguably the top prospect in the state. Whitehaven HS.
Will Pruitt (PG), Tennessee Tigers 17u
Pruitt’s Tennessee Tigers won all five games. Winning is a great reflection of the point guard. So much lighter on his feet, Will Pruitt is quickly becoming a surefire low-major lock. With wonderful court vision he can help any offense. The fear remains that his lateral movement defensively will leave his team exposed to knifing point guards.
Kennedy Chandler (2021 PG), MoKan 17u
Perhaps the most productive weekend from the recruiting standpoint in the whole state. Kennedy added four D1 offers Friday night alone.
Keon Johnson (SG), EAB
vs. Game Elite JB: 16 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists
vs. Garner Road: 25 points, 8 rebounds
vs.Team Carroll: 17 points, 3 steals
What more can be said? Keon is remarkable now and will be incredible later.
Marcellus Brigham Jr. (W), Hoop City
totals: 9.75 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2-2 record
State Champion Marcellus Brigham Jr. helped Briarcrest Christian upend 4-time reigning champions Brentwood Academy in March. Fully acclimated to wing now after looking like a HS tweener as a sophomore. Marcellus is a player previously worthy of a Spotlight article.
17u Second Team
TY HURST
JOHNATHAN LAWSON
JESSE PAYNE
JACOBI WOOD
WESLEY MAPLES
Ty Hurst (PG), Team Passion Elite 17u
2-game average: 22 ppg, 4.5 rpg.
Game-winning buzzer beater from the wing Friday night. Tall guard Ty Hurst plays big when his team needs him. Star scorer for Carter High.
Johnathan Lawson (2021 G), Bluff City Legends 17u
vs. E1T1: 18 points (7-10 FGs), 6 rebounds, 5 assists
With a similarly outrageous wingspan to older brother Chandler Lawson, Johnathan is more nimble. Unlike Chandler who will perpetually play wing forward, J Law is either a tall point guard, or a wing with wonderful handle. He can get chippy at the refs and needs to limit turnovers. Otherwise, there are few flaws in his game.
Jesse Payne (PG), Bluff City GOLD 17u
vs. ECU: 23 points (5 made 3’s)
The Whitehaven guard continues to give amazing shooting performances. For Bluff City GOLD his scoring is required more, and Payne delivers.
JaCobi Wood (PG), WHBH 17u
“Wood, who’s 6-2, controls the tempo of a game when the ball is in his hands,” said Courtney Asher Smith. This is the breakout summer for JaCobi. He does so many things that help his team win. Wood is a MM/HM target.
Wesley Maples (SG), Sevier County Select
The Dreamcrusher did it again. So often during Sevier County High School’s magical playoff run, Maples destroyed defender’s hearts. Again, Wesley Maples buried a game winner over IMG’s AAU team (not their top HS players). Maples is such a unknown prospect regionally that he is likely to skyrocket the most this month.
17u Third Team
DUDDA LACY
AKERM ODUSIPE
DALTON MARSH
JAYLON SANDERS
MARCUS FITZGERALD JR.
Dudda Lacy (PG), BMaze Gold
Dudda is such a complete pest. Diminutive in stature, he is impossible to contain when he dribbles at you. Dudda is a great passer and defensively creates countless problems. All heart.
Akeem Odusipe (F), BMaze Elite
Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. is one of just a handful of elite players excelling outside of TN AAU teams. As a rim runner, Akeem is an important contributor. He still needs work on his low post arsenal. Still, Odusipe’s often his teams leading rebounder. This weekend Odusipe tugged down about 7 rebounds per game.
Dalton Marsh (F), Tennessee Tigers
With a soft touch around the rim as well as from the free throw line Dalton Marsh took command of tempo and the scoreboard for stretches Saturday and Sunday.
Jaylon Sanders (Wing), Tennessee Panthers 17u
Admittedly adding Sanders is kind of cheating as he lives in Mississippi. Sanders is an elite athlete, coasting into the sky with abandon. He plays with a ferocity even more impressive than the other committed players in the country.
Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. (PG), Georgia Stars
vs. Howard Pulley: 16 points, 6 assists
Not a great shooting weekend for Marcus. His athleticism and court awareness are attractive to college coaches. Quick feet, quick mind. Marcus gave a breakout year with Brentwood Academy. This foray back into AAU basketball is showing he is a solidified D1 prospect. Tennessee State is an offer. Belmont is curious. Murray State loves him.
