Continue ReadingAlmost the entire Prep Hoops DMV group, along with other Prep Hoops members, made the trip down to Atlanta together for the first live period to attend the first session of the EYBL. With that, we all decided to watch different games so we could cover the most prospects possible. There will be a lot of write ups, but I can only refer to the players I saw. Since there’s a lot of them I’ve broken them up, and here’s part two consisting of 17U players.
Evan Johnson | 6’0” G | CP3 17U
In their game against Mac Irvin Fire, Johnson was on fire early and was the reason they were able to build a lead at halftime, but he ended up in foul trouble and that was probably a reason they ended up losing that game. He’s a combo guard in the good sense because he can handle pressure and get you into your sets but he can also move off the ball and knock it down from deep as well. He’s an above average athlete who can really guard the basketball as well.
Shakeel Moore | 6’1” PG | CP3 17U
When you talk about toughness at the point guard position, Moore embodies that as he’s willing to sacrifice his body saving a pass, taking a charge or diving on the floor for a loose ball. The toughness translates to the way he seeks contact and finishes many plays around the rim with good strength. He’s a solid shooter, but he excels as a guy who can be a downhill attacker to finish or create for others, and he’s a hound on the defensive end.
Cam Hayes | 6’2” G | CP3 17U
A 2021 that’s playing up with the 17U group, Hayes is a gifted scorer who should continue to improve as his body and athleticism matures with time. He has good length and great feel off the bounce, he has a good midrange game that includes the pull-up and floater and he has a natural knack for scoring the basketball. He also will defend and rebound, and if he turns into a PG at some point moving forward he’ll be coveted by every school in the area.
Dontrez Styles | 6’6” G/F | CP3 17U
Another 2021 that’s playing up, Styles doesn’t come from the biggest area in Kinston, but soon enough people are going to start to know who he is. At 6’6”, Styles has great measurable as far as length and strength, he’s a good athlete who can play above the rim and he’s a shotmaker from all three levels making him very tough to guard. He can play above the rim and thrives in transition, and he’s a guy who can guard multiple positions as well.
Jonathan Kuminga | 6’8” F | NY Rens 17U
I’m convinced that Kuminga should be seriously in consideration for the top player in the 2021 class, as he has a unique skill set at 6’8”, and is one of the few guys that tall I am willing to say is a true wing and almost a guard. At 6’8” he can bring the ball up the floor and create off the bounce, he has the ability to hit from NBA range off the bounce and off the step back and he’s willing to post guys smaller than him or guys that are his size. He’s a big time athlete with a skill set that is well beyond his years.
Cliff Omoruyi | 6’11” C | NY Lightning 17U
One of the top big men in the country, Omoruyi made a big time impact with the Lightning in both of the games I watched. A legit 6’11”, he is a load in the paint but is also mobile enough to run the floor and guard on switches, and he has soft touch out to the midrange as well. He protects the rim well, he can finish with both hands in traffic and he takes up a ton of space making it hard for guards to get in the lane.
Kennedy Chandler | 6’1” PG | Mokan 17U
Another 2021 playing up, Chandler is a dynamic point guard who is shifty and quick, makes solid reads off the bounce and is able to break down defenders and get in the lane in isolation situations. He can get downhill and use his athleticism to finish around the basket, but he’s also a guy who can create space off the bounce to shoot the jumper from midrange or from behind the arc. He needs some fine tuning but he’s going to be a guy do keep an eye on moving forward.
