While we all ended up watching the big games toward the end of the event together we all had our own opinions, some shared and some differed, on what we saw. As I usually do, I will be breaking down who I found to be the most impressive from the games that I watched. Here’s a look at part one of Jack’s standouts from the event.
Lance Johnson | 6’6” PF | NOVA Cavs 17U
In the first game of the day for myself, I watched the Nova Cavs take on Team Silk of Maryland, and All State power forward Lance Johnson out of Freedom South-Riding showed his ability to handle the paint on both ends of the floor. While he’s only 6’6”, Johnson has great timing when contesting shots and while he gets a lot of blocks he also alters other shots and changes the game. He also has nice touch with both hands and good patience in the post.
Chris Miers | 6’0” G | NOVA Cavs 17U
Miers caught my eye as a guy who could emerge as a sleeper in the Northern Virginia area for smaller schools. At 6’0” he isn’t the biggest guy on the court, but he understands the game and finds different ways to impact it. He can catch and shoot from deep at a high clip, he’s a guy who will sacrifice his body on defense for his team and don’t sleep on his athleticism because he can get up to rebound the basketball and will throw it down on the break as well.
Chaunce Jenkins | 6’3” WG | BWSL Meech 17U
A late bloomer out of the 757, Jenkins is a guy who was highly productive in their win over a good Team Legacy group. He has good length and a high motor that he uses to attack the glass on both ends of the floor. He defends well at multiple positions, he attacks the rim off of limited dribbles and he showed the ability to make shots from all over as well, finishing with a team high 20 points.
Quishaun Brevard | 5’10” PG | BWSL Meech 17U
The lead guard that stirred the drink for his team, Brevard is a guy who can go get a bucket at will but he makes the conscious effort to get others involved and set the tone on both ends. He’s a strong and quick guard who can get in the lane and finish through traffic, and he’s good in transition where he can push the tempo and make plays for himself and others. He’s a dual threat and two way impact lead guard who knows how to run a team.
Dana Woodley | 6’2” WG | BWSL Meech 17U
A 2021 that is playing up with this group, Woodley didn’t have the greatest game in their win over Team Legacy but he showed flashes of what makes him an intriguing prospect in the class. The Lee-Davis product has grown a few inches and showed the ability to make shots from all three levels and make plays on both ends of the floor. He’s one we’ll want to keep on our radar moving forward.
Henry Coleman | 6’8” F | Team Loaded VA 17U
Coleman was one of the most productive players in the state during the high school season, and he was his productive self in Team Loaded’s games against District Basketball Club and WeR1. The super athletic and high motor forward does a great job of doing whatever it takes, whether it’s posting smaller wings, cutting without the ball, taking bigs off the dribble or making players for others. He’s able to get a lot done without many plays needing to be called for him, and he still has a lot of room to grow moving forward as well.
Brayon Freeman | 6’1” PG | Team Loaded VA 17U
Freeman is the type of player who was born to be a point guard with his ability to see the game and his creativity as a ball handler and passer. He changes speeds well off the bounce, he’s able to get in the lane and find shooters and he’s able to thread the needle in transition and make passes others can’t make. He has a good middle game with a floater among other things, and he’s improving in his pull-up and his perimeter jumper as well.
Elvin Edmonds | 6’2” G | Team Loaded VA 17U
Edmonds is a combo guard but in the way it was meant to be used, a guy who can shoot the lights out off the ball but is also a capable ball handler who can bring it up against pressure and get his team into sets. He has a unique form on his jump shot, but he has deep range off the catch and he shoots it at a high clip. He understands the game well and he’s a strong guy who can keep defenders at bay and get downhill where he can finish through traffic.
