We have to get the list down to 13 players and our initial list had 26 guys we thought were deserving of being in contention. Here is how it went down.
My Ballot:
Trayce Jackson-Davis (Center Grove)
Brandon Newman (Valparaiso)
Armaan Franklin (Cathedral)
John-Michael Mulloy (Carmel)
Cobie Barnes (Floyd Central)
Luke Bumbalough (New Castle)
Alex Hemenway (Castle)
Isaiah Thompson (Zionsville)
Jalen Windham (Ben Davis)
Dawand Jones (Ben Davis)
Jacob Laravia (Lawrence Central)
Drew Lutz (Penn)
Sydney Curry (Fort Wayne Northrop)
Breakdown:
The class of 2019 is pretty stellar at the top with Trayce Jackson-Davis, Brandon Newman, and Armaan Franklin. And I think those three are a clear cut top of the charts guys. Beyond them, you have some surefire guys in Mulloy, Barnes, Bumbalough, Hemenway, Thompson, Windham, Jones, and Laravia. Those make up 11 of the 13 spots. At the end of the day it should be pretty hard to argue against those 11 making the team. All had great seasons, some lead their teams far beyond what you would have thought, and some broke out to become top players in the state.
Now, this is where subjectivity comes into play. Who did you see? What did you see? Politics? Probably. The last two spots could put any number of different guys in based on the person voting is looking at. For me, Drew Lutz and Sydney Curry make the cut. It was just barely over a few other guys but I loved the play of those two and politics aside, I though they represented the state well. Curry’s dominance at times and taking Northrop into the second weekend of the tournament was a big deal. Lutz was the quintessential leader for Penn and had some big game, although, not sure many saw him this year.
The Other Contenders:
Josh Bryan (Delta)
Ethan Brittain-Watts (Culver Academies)
Cameron Alford (Brownsburg)
Harold Bennett (Crispus Attucks)
Andrew Owens (Carmel)
Jared Hankins (Lawrence North)
Colin Kenney (Marquette Catholic)
Aaron Etherington (Hamilton Southeastern)
Nathan Childress (Zionsville)
Frankie Davidson (Blackhawk Christian)
Will Penny (Logansport)
Wendell DeMyers (Avon)
Jesse Bingham (Warren Central)
Breakdown:
I thought these 13 guys were right there and I would fully expect those last two spots to be coming from this list or the two I had picked. Players of note for me are Josh Bryan, Ethan Brittain-Wats, and Cameron Alford. Bryan was much more impressive than you would know and was the reason why Delta ended up being so dominant this year and went undefeated during the regular season. Between Ethan and Cameron, you could kind of flip a coin. They were about the same in their production but I thought they were both a tick above the others on the list.
