BROOKLYN, NY— The Geico Nationals is the best thing going in high school basketball. Having eight quality teams that are well-coached with rosters that are chock-full with elite talent should get any basketball enthusiast excited. When you have a tournament with arguably the No. 1 “big” in America in Vernon Carey Jr. as well as potential McDonald’s All American candidates in elite juniors Scottie Barnes and Jaden Springer, that is quite exclamation point for must-watch television.
Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (IMG Academy)
2019, PF/WF, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: As the tournament progressed so did Robinson-Earl’s game. The inside-out threat converted some 3s in the championship and attacked Isaiah Stewart off the bounce for some nifty finishes.
Josh Green (IMG Academy)
2019, SG, 6-foot-5, 190 pounds
Green found his groove in the championship gameJoel’s Take: Green, despite being ranked in the Top 10 in the country by most scouting pundits, did not back up that lofty ranking with is play. However, in the championship game his jump shot was starting to drop and his finishing skills (his No. 1 strength) were on full display.
Isaiah Stewart (La Lumiere)
2019, C, 6-foot-10, 250 pounds
Joel’s Take: If this was the NBA, there is no doubt in my mind that Stewart would bag the coveted MVP Award. He is the most productive “Big” that I’ve seen—in terms of delivering consistent dominant performances at both ends—this season and it’s not close. His motor doesn’t stop and he can affect the game at both ends due to his rim protection, soft touch from the perimeter, and springting in transition.
Wendell Green Jr. (La Lumiere)
2020, PG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: This rising junior held up well against some of the nation’s elite at his position. He has a tremendous burst, changes speeds well, and can knock in the deep 3-ball. Defensively, he slides his feet well and he has active hands. One of the more competitors players we saw at this event.
Armando Bacot (IMG Academy)
2019, C, 6-foot-10, 240 pounds
Joel’s Take: Like Josh Green, Bacot struggled to find ways to impact the game throughout this event, especially in the scoring department. However, his full array of skills and savvy were exhibited in the championship game. His length and timing disrupted shots in the paint area and his passing was high-level, both in the half court set as well as in transition.
