BROOKLYN, NY— The Geico Nationals is the best thing going in high school basketball. Having eight quality teams that are well-coached with rosters that are chock-full with elite talent should get any basketball enthusiast excited. When you have a tournament with arguably the No. 1 “big” in America in Vernon Carey Jr. as well as potential McDonald’s All American candidates in elite juniors Scottie Barnes and Jaden Springer, that is quite exclamation point for must-watch television.
Isaiah Stewart (La Lumiere)
2019, C/PF, 6-foot-9, 250 pounds
Stewart plays with a hot motor and budding skillJoel’s Take: One of my favorite players in the Class of 2019 is definitely Stewart. Relentless motor, good hands, and a surprisingly soft touch from the elbow describes this Washington-bound big man. His assertiveness never stops as he attacks both backboards with passion and his rim protection makes attackers think twice before entering the paint.
Keion Brooks (La Lumiere)
2019, PF, 6-foot-8, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Brooks will make an immediate impact at Kentucky due to his versatility, motor, and budding skills. He can attack off the bounce, nail mid-range jump shots, and assault the rim with a vengeance in transition.
Wendell Green Jr. (La Lumiere)
2020, PG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more fearless competitors in quarterfinal action was the play of Green. He showed a nice burst off the dribble, attacked the rim with tenacity, and knocked in some deep 3’s. Defensively, his active hands made Zaon Collins’ life a tad stressful at times.
Zaon Collins (Bishop Gorman)
2021, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Collins is one of the elite passers in the countryJoel’s Take: Collins is considered one of the best point guard prospects in his class. He is a consistent jump shot away from being mentioned with the nation’s elite. Long arms, big hands, exceptional quickness describe this up-and-coming point guard. However, the best part of his game is his impeccable passing ability, especially in the open court.
Chance Michels (Bishop Gorman)
2019, PG, 6-foot, 165 pounds
fJoel’s Take: The owner of the best two-hand pass in basketball has also improved his jump shot. He knocked in three deep 3s off the catch and handed out some sweet passes in transition. The combination of Michels as well as juniors Noah Taitz and Will sparked Bishop Gorman to an almost monumental upset of No. 1 ranked La Lumiere.
