Dez McKinney 6’0″ Marcus Denmon Elite: The athletic point guard from Raytown South had a strong weekend in helping his team to the 17U championship. He was a force on both ends of the floor with his ability to attack the rim on offense and be disruptive on defense. He is strong with the ball and he could get to the basket with ease while using either hand. He was an excellent finisher and played well through contact. He also knocked down enough perimeter jumpers to keep defenders honest. He is a willing defender who was also very good at getting into the passing lanes and forcing turnovers.
Jaylen Boyd 6’1″ Team Ramey CCM: A slashing point guard who played well on both ends of the court during the weekend. He is athletic enough to get to the basket plus he has the ability to change speeds and keep opposing defenders off balance at all times. Being a lefty also helps his in that regard. He has improved his ability to make perimeter jumpers over the course of the year which makes him ever more difficult to defend.
Maricus Grant 6’2″ Marcus Denmon Elite: The physical point guard from Battle is arguably the best defensive guard in the state and he did nothing over the weekend to dispel that opinion. He is a menace as an on-ball defender as he stays in a stance and uses his footwork along with his physical strength and quick hands. He rarely takes a play off defensively and that really sets the tone for his team that won the championship. He is a solid passer on the offensive end, where he is at his best when getting to the basket and finishing. He also displayed a nice jump stop and floater in the lane during the weekend.
Kobe Campbell 6’0″ Marcus Denmon Elite: A smooth point guard who plays very well with and without the basketball. He has the ability to play at a fast tempo while always staying under control to make good decisions and make plays. He gets to the basket with ease and has the ability to score with both hands at the rim. He has good quickness and moves faster than he appears to be.
Kyle Geraghty 6’0″ Arsenal Hoops Elite: A solid point guard who knows how to run a team with his ball handling and passing ability. He has gotten physically stronger, which enables him to handle the pressure defense and take any contact. He will get to the basket to knock down the short jumper or drop a nice dime to an open teammates.
Cortez Howlett 5’11” Marcus Denmon Select: It was my first time seeing this capable guard from Raytown High and I was impressed with his overall ability on the offensive end. He was strong off the dribble and he displayed the ability to score on penetrating drives and jumpers in the lane.
Charlie Ferrick 6’2″ Missouri Basketball Club: “Charlie Buckets” displayed his uncanny ability to score at a variety of angles while constantly attacking the basket and putting the pressure on opposing defenses. He scores through contact and lives in the lane on the offensive end. He also has a nice float game and has improved his ability to knock down mid-range jumpers off the dribble.
Kevin McCoy 5’11” St. Louis Cobras Elite: A nice lefty point guard who has the ability to make plays off the dribble and knock down perimeter jumpers from long distance. He is a solid ball handler who does a nice job of playing at his own pace without being hurried. He shoots it well off the catch.
