The event was loaded with numerous teams, some of which included very talented prospects. In this article, Brandon Jenkins highlights the shooting guards who stood out with their level of play this past weekend:
Manny Obaseki – Shooting Guard – Mudiay Elite (UAA) – 2021
Obaseki (Allen) was one of the most exciting players at the event this weekend. His terrific athleticism gets him from point A to point B very quickly on both ends and is the foundation of his game. He scored 18 points in the blowout win over the Texas Playmakerz and dropped a team-high 26 points in a one-point victory over Urban ASAK. The former state champion guard is continuing to evolve as a quality ball handler under intense pressure, but is an excellent scoring slasher due to a nice first step and will dazzle the crowd once he is at the rim in any point or time.
Caleb Golden – Shooting Guard – Urban ASAK – 2020
It was about two months ago when I saw Golden playing in a district game with Round Rock Cedar Ridge and he left a lot to be desired. However, his play this weekend reminded me of why he was such a highly regarded player within the state after his freshman year. Golden’s best performance was in the Sunday afternoon matchup vs. Mudiay Elite (UAA). He went for a game-high 32 points displaying his high-level athleticism by finishing plays at the rim and showing the ability to connect on perimeter shots when in rhythm. Consistency is the ultimate question mark within Golden’s game. If he can reliably take on the role as ASAK’s primary scorer, expect for the Division I schools to start calling.
Baylor Hebb – Shooting Guard – 3D Empire – 2020
After a 16-point performance in the Saturday morning loss to Marcus Smart YGC36 (Adidas), Hebb (Colleyville Heritage)put together quite the performance in his second matchup facing Texas Hardwork (UAA). The gifted scoring guard had a quiet five-point first half due to suffering a hip injury. But in the second half, he played through the pain and was extremely lethal from the outside scoring 27 points. He finished with a total of 32 points in the win and what would be his final game of the weekend (due to injury).
