Marietta, GA.—The McDonald’s All-American Game, which tipped Wednesday night, is the ultimate individual goal for most high school cagers and the action during the pre-game scrimmage magnified that statement. The scrimmage was highlighted by the play of Washington-bound Isaiah Stewart’s dominance over consensus No. 1 player James Wiseman where such attributes of production and moxie trumped overall physical gifts and upside.
Armando Bacot Jr. (IMG Academy)
C, 6-foot-10, 235 pound
Bacot has long arms, good feet, and soft hands.Joel’s Take: Bacot Jr. used his length, solid footwork, and magnetic hands to finish in the paint and snag rebounds in and out of his area. He lacks quickness and explosiveness, but he has post skills and solid footwork that will bode him well at UNC.
Cole Anthony (Oak Hill Academy)
PG, 6-foot-3, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Anthony has natural leadership skills—not surprisingly considering his father (Greg Anthony) was a fine leader in his own right. There isn’t really anything Anthony can’t do on the court. He can knock in deep jumpshots, possesses a tremendous burst off the dribble, and his vision is excellent. From observing him for the last season, it’s about consistent production and engagement.
Oscar Tshiebwe (Kennedy Catholic)
F/C, 6-foot-9, 250 pounds
Joel’s Take: Blue collar madness comes immediately to mind when describing Tshiebwe. His brings a physical presence to go along with a high motor, solid hands, and bounce. He ran well in transition and finished in the paint, but overall his finishing skills need to improve while operating in the paint.
Kahlil Whitney (Roselle Catholic)
WF, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Whitney has all the physical tools to be an NBA player someday. He has that prototypical frame with good length and he’s a big time athlete. He showed the ability to knock in deep jump shots, mid-range pull-ups, or smash on would-be defenders in transition.
Wendell Moore (Cox Hill)
SG, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Moore will not “wow’ you with above the rim finishes and flash, but he’ll disect the defense and take whats given to him due to his savvy and IQ. His pull-up game is tight as he is always on balance and his shot is soft. He knows how to get into the creases of the defense and his foot work is impeccable.
Isaiah Mobley (Rancho Christian)
PF, 6-foot-9, 230 pounds
Mobley has a vast skill set and feel for this game.Joel’s Take: Mobley utilized his ball skills and savvy to make plays both in the half court as well as in transition. He isn’t a “big” leaper or overly quick, but his ball handling, vision, and overall feel for the game is high level. He can play some point forward at times or impact the game from the elbow due to his passing and shooting touch.
