Kaukauna Ghosts
Kaukauna was one game away from making it to state last year. Unfortunately for the Ghosts, they ran into the daunted Nicolet Knights. Although Kaukauna will be forced to replace Donovan and Brayden Ivory, they are still the early favorite to take home the FVA crown. With the triumvirate of Keaton Ferris, Logan Jedwabny, and Jacob Newhouse all returning for their senior seasons, Kaukauna could be a dark horse in D-2.
Nicolet Knights
To say Nicolet isn’t the favorite to win the D-2 championship would be disrupting reality. In the 2019-2020 season, the Knights have a chance to be one of the best Wisconsin high school basketball teams ever assembled. With Jalen Johnson and Jamari Sibley in the frontcourt, Nicolet will have the athletic and height advantage over just about any of their challenges. Sibley and Johnson are good enough to bring their team to the promised land, but the Knights are more than their two stars. The amelioration of Kobe Johnson and James Graham was key for Nicolet in their 2019 championship run.
Onalaska Hilltoppers
Coming off a 20 win season, Onalaska will once again be a contender in the 2019-2020 season. The Hilltoppers will return their top four scorers from last year’s squad, most importantly last year’s leading scorer Tyrell Stuttley. Stuttley averaged 15.3 points per game in his junior season. Expect Onalaska to be right in the mix of things in the D-2 title race.
Madison East Purgolders
Madison East was upset by Marquise Milton and Racine Horlick in the 2019 WIAA state tournament. Despite their disappointing end to an otherwise fantastic 2018-19 season, the Purgolders will be back for more in the upcoming season. Expect there to be little fall off with this team as they return Anthony Washington and Keonte Jones.
Sun Prairie Cardinals
After losing Jalen Johnson and Marlon Ruffin, Sun Prairie was expected to have a rebuilding year. Instead, the Cardinals made a surprise trip to Madison and took down West Allis Central in the D-1 semifinal game. In the upcoming season, the Cardinals will not be forced to completely re-tool like they did last year. Delaware Hale and Colin Schaefer will both be returning for their senior campaigns. After last year’s run, the sky is the limit for Jeff Boos’ 2019-2020 squad.
