I thought this was a fun topic to cover that we could continuously cover and update as the year goes on and opinions change. Here are my way too early picks for State next season!
Top Teams
Salpointe Catholic (Last Year Ranking: #4)
I think Salpointe is my early favorite for the State Championship next season. They’ve gotten so close for so many years but were taken down by the era of Shadow Mountain. With the exit of Blackshear and House, I think 4A is wide open. With that being said, I’ll pick Salpointe due to their experience. They’ll have 7 seniors on the team next year and one of them is named Evan Nelson. Look for Evan Nelson to finish his high school career with a State Ring.
Shadow Mountain (Last Year Ranking: #1)
Blackshear and House are gone and they will sorely be missed by Shadow Mountain. However, I think they still have a solid chance of repeating without them. It won’t be as easy as they’ve made it look the last 4 years but I think this group has it in them. They are returning the Cobbs brothers, Davon and DeVontes, and Shemar Morrow. I think this big three is more than enough to put them in the conversation of early state title contenders.
Moon Valley (Last Year Ranking: #16)
I think Moon Valley is the dark horse out of these three teams but still think they have a solid chance. They are returning their two best players, who are also their two leading scorers, Trent Hudgens and Ty Harper. Since 4A is a lot more open now, I don’t see why this team can’t be successful with those two guys. While other teams are losing a lot of talented players, Moon Valley is bringing all of their talent back.
