But don’t forget, at one time Goins was your common 2 star prospect out of Warren Mott. He went to Tom Izzo and Michigan State as a walk-on. Goins had an unheralded redshirt freshman season that saw him average 2ppg, 2.9rpg, and .8apg.
But little did we know that Goins was just seeing himself through the process of becoming the best player he could be. He turned himself into the type of player that Izzo has built his elite program around – hard working blue collar kids that continue to improve. Goins blossomed into a skilled leader that cared more about the success of his team and the Michigan State program than he did about personal accolades.
Kenny Goins is now looking at a possible future as a professional basketball player. He recently played at the Portsmouth Invitational, where college seniors played in front of NBA scouts.
Dylan Jergens, meet Kenny Goins.
Jergens, is a star guard in the class of 2019. He played for Howardsville Christian and ended his high school career as one of the most prolific scorers in Michigan basketball history. Jergens scored 2782 career high school points. This ranks third all time. Last season, Jergens averaged 40.4ppg. He is now headed to Central Michigan University as a preferred walk-on.
Dylan Jergens ended up being ranked generally in the top 15-20 prospects in Michigan’s class of 2019. But trust me when i say, he’s been perpetually underranked as a prospect. Jergens matches the blue collar work ethic that we talked about with Kenny Goins. People asked whether he could shoot like that consistently, so he did. People asked if he could handle the ball and distribute like a true point guard, so he did. Now the question that skeptics have is whether Jergens can move from a small high school in Michigan to Division 1 college basketball. I certainly know what my answer is.
I see a lot of Kenny Goins in Dylan Jergens. Nobody expected greatness from Goins, and now he’s cemented himself in Michigan State basketball history. Many aren’t expecting greatness from Jergens. Some of us however, can see what may be on the horizon.
