DeAndre Turner- Michigan Goonies
DeAndre Turner was extremely impressive in the Michigan Goonies 73-51 win over the Illinois Badgers. The 6’0″ guard stood out because of his versatility. He is a willing passer and a more than capable scorer. On two occasions, Turner flashed his passing skills. The first time, he drove into the lane and had a pretty dish to a teammate that led to a foul and two made free throws. After that, he chucked a pretty full-court pass that led to an easy transition bucket. The 2021 standout will be a player to keep an eye on throughout the rest of his high school and AAU career.
Joey Tocco- Michigan Goonies
When DeAndre Turner was not playing, there was no dropoff in quality guard play. Joey Tocco took the reigns when Turner sat. Tocco shinned as a ball handler and facilitator in the Goonies victory. Tocco took what the defense gave him and did not try to be a player that he wasn’t. The 2020 guard was more than happy to pass the rock and lets other players score.
Cle’shon Phipps- Illinois Badgers
Despite falling to the previously mentioned Michigan Goonies, Cle’shon Phipps had a nice game. Phipps’ aggressiveness nearly fueled a Badgers comeback. Every time he touched the ball, Phipps looked to score. The 6’4″ Jefferson High School standout possesses rare length paired with great coordination. This will not be the last time you hear the name Cle’shon Phipps.
Blake Herber- Minnesota Lightning
Blake Herber was one of the quickest players that I watched on Friday Night. Herber used his superior speed to blow past defenders and get easy layups. In Minnesota Lightning’s 63-56 win over Dubuque Intensity, Herber led his squad in scoring with 16 points.
David Castleberg-Minnesota Lightning
While Blake Herber was controlling the outside, David Castleberg dominated the paint. Facing substantial size from Dubuque Intensity, Castleberg was able to hold down the fort. His numbers won’t jump off the page, but he made a positive impact for his squad. Castleberg served as a roadblock for Dubuque Intensity guards looking to get to the rack.
Dontay Horshaw- MN Comets
I did not catch all of the MN Comets win over Iowa Prep, but what I did see left me impressed with Dontay Horshaw. The guard showcased his speed, athleticism, and playmaking ability. Horshaw had two crafty contested layups and also knocked down a three. Horshaw’s raw talent could make him an interesting prospect as he matures and improves.
