While the basketball itself wouldn’t be described as ‘high quality’, there was certainly a lot of high quality talent filling up the courts.
Here are some guards who stood out at the 16U level on Saturday
Tyler Terhark, 17U ECI Prospects
Terhark was a productive player for West Fargo Sheyenne last year and his well-rounded game stood out Saturday as he’s able to make an impact in a lot of areas. He’s good defensively on an off the ball, he’s explosive and strong playing through contact and he’s a capable shot-creator for himself or his teammates. The next step for him will be extending his range a little more but he does so many things well right now.
Will Obioha, 16U ECI Prospects
Obioha is a raw piece of clay that with fine-tuning, could be a force. He’s 6-foot-5 with long limbs, quick leaping ability and solid skills. When he gets an opportunity to make a play with the ball in transition, he makes the most of it. He flashes some big plays on both ends of the floor at times too, whether its a block on the weakside, jumping a passing lane or coming out of nowhere for an offensive rebound. He has a ways to go with his jumper and his off-ball defense could stand to improve – very overcomeable for a sophomore – but Obioha has a chance to be a monster.
Jaxon Kellogg, 16U ND Phenom
Kellogg is an eighth-grader playing up with the 16U Phenom team and without looking at a roster sheet that shows his age, there’d be no clues of an age gap. The Bismarck Century guard is big, strong, smooth and plays under control. There’s a lot to like about this kid and it’ll be interesting to track his development over this summer before he even sets foot in a high school.
Brady Dvorak, 17U ECI Prospects
Dvorak was one of the top scorers in Class A North Dakota last season and that ability is still there for the Grand Forks Red River junior, but I was impressed with his overall play Saturday. Dvorak is a feisty defender on the perimeter and did a good job running the team. He played under control and did a great job getting ECI into good offense a majority of the time.
Max Tchosik, 16U ND Phenom
Tchosik did a good job consistently pushing the pace for Phenom. He’s one of the few guys that was able to get by first row defenders and get a piece of the paint consistently. He looks like a solid distributor and his on-ball defense helped set a tone. The Bismarck sophomore is a player to watch the rest of the summer.
