Miners are a team that can compete with some of the top teams in the nation as they have the perfect blend of speed and size. They are also made up of some of the state’s best it just all has to come together. Here are their standouts.
Isaac Ondekane – 6’8 Mullen
Luke O Brien – 6’7 – Columbine
Liam Mckenny – 6’6 – Battle Mountain
Conner Vernon – 6’5 – Chatfield
Christopher Speller – 6’5 – Rangeview
Dominique Clifford – 6’4 – Vanguard
Christian Speller – 6’3 – Rangeview
Christian Davis – 6’2 – Mullen
Isaiah Hayes – 6’2 – Rangeview
This is one of the most dangerous AAU teams in the state and with a group with this many solid players they will also have success out of state as well. Just look at the size of this team and then with the type of scorers that are capable of having big games this has to be top three AAU teams in the state that teams will surely have problems with. O Brien is Colorado’s top overall player and is a 6’7 prospect capable of winning a game on his own. He is one of the best scorers in the state and has the size, strength, speed and skill to lead this team each time out. There is also big time scorer and unsigned senior Christian Davis who can shoot lights out and had a game where he scored 50+ this year and also Clifford who has the makings to be a top five player in this class. Clifford is able to go inside and out and is very athletic. He scores in various ways, rebounds well and will only make this team more dangerous. Look for this team to really run teams out of the gym.
The X-factors for this team is Ondekane and Speller. It is so difficult even calling them X-factors. Speller led his team to the state championship and was the MVP of the tourney. He is a high IQ point guard with size that does not force many things, handles the ball well, finds the open man but creates so many mismatches. He will surely lead this team in assists and run the offense well.
Ondekane is 6’8 and very skilled. He is a bruiser inside and plays his hardest each time out. He makes other bigs work, he can score, defends well, patrols the paint and it will be exciting to see how teams try and defend him as it is going to be tough to double-team him with a group so talented. This should be his coming out season as not many know about this big men or have seen him play.
Other players to watch: Christian Speller, Hayes – both bring energy and versatility. They are also both tenacious defenders that excel in the open court who are willing passers that have the ability to play above the rim.
