The Adidas Gauntlet hosted four cities around the country for their regional qualifiers and Spartanburg, South Carolina was the host for the southeastern region of the map. The Upwards Stars Center was host to Adidas grassroots programs like Team Loaded (NC), Team Loaded (VA), Game Elite (FL), Game Elite (GA), Team Harden (TX), Garner Road (NC), Atlanta Celtics (GA), and more. Georgia was certainly well represented with all 15U-17U squads from both Game Elite and Atlanta Celtics in the building.
Both the Atlanta Celtics and Game Elite 17U squads went 3-1 overall over the weekend and had great starts to their Adidas Gauntlet season in Spartanburg. 2020 KD Johnson of Southwest Dekalb High School led the Game Elite squad this weekend averaging 26.0 points per game. We all know about Johnson’s dynamic game but 2020 PG Caleb Byrd of Rome High School was also super impressive this weekend in South Carolina.
Caleb is a 6-foot-1 guard probably does not receive as much as attention in the peach state. He plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor and he can spread the defense with his shot making skills. The junior guard averaged 14.0 points per game for Game Elite this weekend and should receive some attention along side KD and others during the live period. Game Elite defeated Garner Road (NC), Team Carroll (AL), and Team Loaded (VA) with there only lost coming to Team Loaded (NC).
The Atlanta Celtics were led by another Georgia prospect who should have a breakout spring, summer in 2020 PG Deivon Smith of Grayson High School. Deivon averaged 19.0 points per game for the Atlanta Celtics this weekend. Besides Smith leading his squad in scoring, 2020 G Caleb Murphy of Norcross High School had himself a solid weekend as well in his Adidas Gauntlet debut. Murphy averaged 15.8 points per game for the Celtics and will be another prospect to keep an eye on during the live period. Caleb is a lockdown defender on defense and also a player who is able to put the ball in the basket on offense. He has the tools to do about everything on the floor but his full potential has yet to unlock.
The Celtics defeated Game Elite (FL), Team Carroll (AL), and Upward Stars (SC) with their only lost coming to Team Loaded (NC) this weekend. The next Gauntlet series will be played in Dallas, Texas during the live period in front of college coaches, scouts, and plenty more national media. The schedule has yet to be released but should be released the week of.
