2020 Mandarin G Quajon Young talks Prep Hoops Circuit, Recruitment and More
Fresh off a steady junior campaign, 2020 Mandarin guard Quajon Young is carving out a name for himself.
The 5’8″, 145-pounder averaged 12.2 PPG for the Mustangs (15-11) who lost in the Class 9A region quarterfinal to Oviedo. Young had a season-best 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field in a December loss to Atlantic Coast.
“I had a great junior season. I was the leading scorer and we made history winning our first district championship since 2008,” Young told Prep Hoops. “The most growth I saw from myself was that I became more mature and really became a better young man and a better teammate.”
Earlier this month, I saw Young really shine at the Prep Hoops Circuit #GrindSZNKickoff in Oklahoma City for the North Florida Hurricanes. He helped his team make a deep run in bracket play which included a 24-point effort in a win over the Oklahoma Hustle.
“The Prep Hoops Circuit was an amazing experience. For my first time being in it, I really enjoyed the competition,” he said.
This is Young’s first summer with the Hurricanes program.
“My summer with the NF Hurricanes has been amazing so far. I love my brothers and the coaching staff,” he said. “I got to say I love every moment right now.”
No offers have come yet for the scrappy and speedy guard but he’s drawn some interest from the likes of TCU and UCF thus far.
In terms of his top strengths, Young says he plays with a chip on his shoulder and plays every game like it is his last. He says he wants to improve his jumping ability, overall footwork and he wants to dunk.
A true lightning bolt, Young is used to carrying the backcourt wherever he plays and he’s due for a steady rest of his summer and a senior year for Mandarin. He may be undersized, but his basketball mindset is one that is filled with heart and full effort. A college program will take a chance on him because of his mix of shooting, speed and overall IQ.
