After with a lot of shuffling and new additions to the group, we are beginning to turn the page on the class of 2019 as they graduate and head to college in the next month or two. Here’s a breakdown of the top shooting guards and combo guards in the 2019 class.
- KyKy Tandy, University Heights Academy – Tandy is among the best scorers we’ve seen in the last several years in Kentucky. A gifted athlete and playmaker, KyKy was a walking highlight reel for most of his time at UHA. He’ll enroll at Xavier in a few months and will be in the mix for playing time at either guard spot right away.
- Jackson Harlan, Clinton County – Harlan used a huge performance at last summer’s WKU team camp to earn an offer from Coach Stansbury and didn’t wait long to commit. Jackson is a certified bucket getter who could get on the court for the Hilltoppers next season thanks to his ability to put the ball in the hole.
- JJ Kalakon, Waggener – JJ is a Swiss army knife type of player who can play and guard any position on the floor. His statistics won’t blow you away but he fills up a box score with scoring, rebounding and assists while affecting the game on both ends of the floor. Kalakon is still unsigned and should be a nice pick-up for wherever he lands.
- Trevon Smith, Taylor County – Smith is one of the better scorers in the state in the class. A smooth lefty, Trevon nearly got Taylor County back to Rupp Arena, falling a game short. Trevon is going to play the next two seasons at Tallahassee Community College and likely to land at the D1 level after that.
- JJ Ramey, South Laurel – Pikeville got a steal with one of the best athletes in the state in JJ Ramey. JJ is a good scorer and will tear the rim off if he gets a chance. Don’t be surprised to see Ramey in the rotation early next season for the Bears.
Other Names to Know:
- Derrin Boyd, Caldwell County – Potentially a steal for Georgetown College, Derrin will score a lot of points over the next few years.
- Connor Guthrie, Mayfield – Connor had a great season on his way to being 1st region player of the year. He’s headed to Bethel for college.
- Blake Butler, Jeffersontown – Coming from way off our radar to be the 6th region player of the year, Butler is headed to Junior College.
- Cameron Wilson, Valley – Still available, Cameron is a great mystery to many outside Louisville. He can really score the ball and should be a college player at some level soon.
- Walter Johnson, Ballard – A transfer from Trinity resulted in Walter being one of the best surprises of the 2018-19 season. He has yet to declare a college choice but has some offers.
