And as always this tournament did not disappoint with high level action at numerous gyms all over the city. Here are some of the top performers that I observed Sunday in the 10th grade division.
Ethan Bell (2021/Extreme Heat 2021) – Bell was one of the better point man that I observed in my two days of observation. In a spirited, competitive battle with Ohio Players Aaron Davis (more on him later) Bell showed a very high IQ, outstanding passing ability and proved to be a knock down shooter. While maybe not athletic as other guards, he uses his body well on drives and always seemed to make the right play. I was very impressed with the River Valley High product.
Aaron Davis (2021/Ohio Players) – As my fellow PHO writer Brandon Little stated in his assessment of Davis, he uses his athleticism and speed to get in the lane and finish with either hand. Aaron was among the fastest guards end to end in the whole tournament and was not afraid to pull up in the lane to knock down mid-range jumpers. In his duel with the before mentioned Ethan Bell, Davis competed hard and was somewhat disruptive on the defensive end.
TJ Pugh (2021 PHO #39/Extreme Heat 2021) – Pugh’s versatile skill set was on full display over the past weekend. He attacked the offensive glass and the paint with aggression while showing the capacity to be get the ball off the defensive backboard and lead the break. But was most impressive was his ability to have an impact on the game without shooting his best. Not many players understand that. While Ohio U. has been in contact with Pugh there was also chatter that Northern Kentucky also has interest in the Shelby High performer.
Marcus Steele (2021/SMAC Akron) – Steele is a very shifty guard who can stop on a dime to either change direction or pull up in your face for a mid-range jumper. Marcus also showed nice handle in traffic and was not afraid to go right at the chest of the opposing team’s shot-blocker. Definitely a name to watch for in NE Ohio.
