Over the next couple weeks, we will highlight some of the top prospects at each position as well as some sleepers coming off big seasons who we are looking forward to evaluating in the coming months. The 2020 class is loaded with talented prospects primed to see their stock rise this summer. Here is a look at some of the top point guards in the impressive 2020 class.
Phillip Russell – Vashon
On a Vashon team loaded with star power, Phillip did anything but fly under the radar. He was a critical piece to the Wolverine’s state championship run. An excellent distributor, Russell dished out over 6 assists per game in his junior campaign. He also scored 11 points per game and has developed a reputation as one of the best marksmen from long range in the area. He buried 75 three-pointers at a 50% clip on the year. In the Final Four against Charleston, Phillip buried four early threes in route to a 20 point effort in the big win. He followed up with 17 in the championship win over Catholic. With a trio of D1 offers from Valpo, SEMO, and UMKC already in hand, he will look to keep reeling them by showcasing his game this summer.
Rashad Weekly-McDaniels – Trinity
Featured in a recent spotlight piece by our own Scott Burgess, Rashad is coming off a fantastic junior campaign at Trinity which included a district title and a run into the quarterfinals. There is a lot to like about his game. He is built like a freight train and has developed a versatile skill-set. He really gets after it on the defensive end and uses his superior strength as a strong downhill driver. He is a good passer and can play on or off the ball. He had some of his best performances in the biggest moments this year dropping 26 on Vashon in a near upset and 23 against McCluer North. Rashad holds a Western Illinois offer and has seen a bump in his stock lately. He will look to take it up to another level running with the Jets this summer.
Dontae Taylor – Parkview
This was supposed to be a historic season for Parkview, who had a strong core returning and a new addition in Missouri State signee Tyem Freeman. After a hot start, the Vikings lost Freeman to injury and had the course of their season reset. Dontae, who was already playing quite well as a distributor and opportunistic scorer, adjusted quite well as the go-to-guy down the stretch. He has some of the best court-vision and “thread the needle” passing ability that I saw this season and has proven that he can be a guy that create his own offense. He was named 1st Team All-Ozark Conference and will hit the floor with Mo-Flight this summer.
Maricus Grant – Battle
Maricus came into his junior year as one of the only remaining roster members of a Battle program that had recently won two district titles. He led them to another one this season with a fabulous personal campaign. He was named the Class 5 District 8 Player of the Year. He has paid his dues over the years for the Spartans and has emerged as a clear leader on the floor. A pesky, aggressive defender and excellent passer, Maricus has developed his game as a scorer and will look to boost his profile and lock in some offers with Marcus Denmon Elite this summer.
Jaylen Boyd – Ladue
Jaylen may have taken the biggest leap of any lead guard in the area this season with a brilliant stretch that led the Rams all the way to the Final Four. He averaged 13 points and 3.5 assists per game and proved time and time again throughout the year that he has ice water in his veins. In one of the most memorable moments of the high school season and a berth to the quarterfinals on the line, Boyd rebounded his own miss and buried a game-tying step back three at the buzzer against Jennings. He was named to the Class 4 All-State Team and will be a player that coaches and scouts keep a close eye on during the Grassroots season.
