South Johnston HS brought a large amount of fans while Westover students and supporters showed up as well. The first half was a back and forth matchup with the teams going into halftime tied up at 32. The 3rd quarter is where Westover caught fire and turned it up on the defensive end which helped them get separation as they never looked back, getting the win.
South Johnson Junior Forward CJ Ray: The motor that he plays with is second to none, he’s constantly working on the court and trying to come up with every loose ball he can get. His ability to finish inside was on full display as well as his stellar rebounding ability, which is impressive for a player that is undersized at his position. He may not get the big schools coming in to see him due to his size but we feel he can play on the next level without a doubt.
South Johnston Senior Point Guard JaQuain Smith: He had a big time first half performance for his squad, scoring 14 out of his 19 points in the half. His speed and ability to knock down shots were the reasons that he was able to be so successful, on the defensive end of the floor he was solid as well.
South Johnston Senior Guard Jacob Thornton: He didn’t necessarily have a big day scoring the ball but his ability to knock down threes forced the defense to pay close attention to him all game long. He moves well without the ball and once he gets an open look, he doesn’t take long to get his shot off, finished with 8 points.
Westover HS Senior Tyron George: Plays the game with a good amount of intensity and energy, he is one of the players that provides a huge spark for his team. Slashing to the basket and applying constant pressure to ball handlers to force turnover are things you will see from him consistently. If he continues to play at this level, it will only help Westover to make a deeper run in the playoffs, he finished with 18 points on the night.
Westover HS Sophomore Guard Darius Jewell: Three point shooting is what he’s known for, and that’s what he brought for the Westover squad. He’s a player that has nice range on his shot and doesn’t take a ton of time with getting his shot off. After going scoreless in the 1st quarter he would finish the game with 14 points, going 3 for 6 on the night from three point land.
Westover HS Junior Forward Traymond Willis-Shaw: Out of all the players on the floor, we have him slated as the best overall prospect, he’s tall with a long wingspan and a very high ceiling off potential. One thing we liked was how well he picked his spots, he didn’t force any plays and was efficient at the free throw line after drawing fouls.
Westover HS Senior Forward Xavier Marsh: The multi-sport athlete brought some toughness in the paint which was what Westover needed to battle a scrappy team. He did a solid job of finishing inside the paint, blocking shots, and rebounding the ball.
