They are currently 17-8 overall and gearing up for a Class 4 District 7 championship game today at 2:30pm against St. Charles West. What makes the season more impressive for the Comets is the fact that they’ve made one of the biggest turnarounds in the area after finishing a disappointing 7-20 last season. One of the key components to the returned success at McCluer is standout 6’5 Sr Dareon Graham. He has been a leader and consistent force for the Comets this year. The long, athletic wing is averaging just under 17 points per game on a very efficient 59% from the field, 48% from 3, and 70% from the charity stripe to go along with nearly five rebounds per contest. He is a versatile scorer who flies in transition, can take his man off the dribble, knock down the jumper with range, and take advantage of smaller defenders in the post. He’s a proven go-to-guy that has scored 20 or more points in ten games this season. As we head into the heart of postseason play, PrepHoops got a chance to catch up with Dareon about the season and his recruitment. Check out our Q&A below.
PrepHoops: What are your overall thoughts on the season so far and how the team is looking heading into postseason play?
DG: Overall the season has gone good, from 7-20 last year to 17-8 now we turned it around big time. Headed into the postseason we are looking way better. We are the #1 seed and we are going to show teams why.
PrepHoops: What do you think have been the biggest keys to your teams turnaround this season?
DG: Our biggest turnaround is our defense, because our defense really gets us going and hyped up. Also our togetherness. Once we swing the ball and start hitting shots we feel like nobody can stop us.
PrepHoops: How has recruitment been going for you so far? Any offers or anyone particular in touch regularly?
DG: Recruitment has been going ok, but hopefully will keep getting better. No offers yet but I’ve heard from Millikin, Rockhurst, Illinois College, Ohio Valley, STLCC, and Greenville
PrepHoops: What are the most important factors for you when you choose your next stop?
DG: The biggest factors will be a group that is hardworking. I like to be pushed to be better and want to have a good bond with my coach. I also want to go somewhere that well help me keep increasing my basketball IQ to a higher level.
PrepHoops: What are the biggest things the school you choose can expect from you as a teammate and player on the court?
DG: As a teammate I am really fun to be around. I like having fun and joking around sometimes with the team. But as a player on the court I’m giving it my all. I am hard working, a great listener, and can take criticism for my mistakes. I am a leader and I try to make people around me better in the best way I can.
