Butler, a 6-foot-3 junior, made 7 of 8 field goal attempts and led OCP with 17 points and 7 rebounds in the 3A semifinal victory over Jupiter Christian. Allen Lubin, a 6-6 freshman, was impressive with 16 points.
Gedeon Germinal (Jupiter Christian)
The 6-1 senior guard made 6 of 13 from the field and finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in a tight loss to Orlando Christian Prep.
Kenneth Johnson (North Florida Educational)
The 6-2 senior guard out of the Bahamas had a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) in the Class 2A semifinal victory over Miami Schoolhouse Prep. He shot 8 of 13 from the floor and also had 3 steals in 26 minutes, 44 seconds. Coach Stacey Poole Jr. said Jacksonville, West Florida and FAMU are among the colleges watching Johnson, who wears No. 3. Johnson said getting to the final four last year helped his confidence. “It helped out a lot because we knew what to expect,” he said. “We were a lot more serious this year.”
Deangelo Elisee (North Florida Educational)
Elisee, a 6-8, 226-pound junior power forward out of the Bahamas, scored 10 points, hauled down 8 rebounds and had 5 blocks for NFE. Elisee shot 5 of 10 from the field. Saevion Brown and Jashawne Josephs are a couple of talented 2021s. Brown tallied 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals while Josephs had 11 points and 7 rebounds. North Florida Educational outrebounded Schoolhouse Prep, 42-31, and had 13 steals. NFE came into the final four with a 15-12 record but played up on many occasions, including vs. Jacksonville Ribault, Windermere, Daytona Beach Mainland and Forest Hill. “You want to play against the best,” Poole said. “It’s always going to make you better.”
Ange Dibwa, Carl Bigord (Schoolhouse Prep)
Dibwa (6-10, 2020) and Bigord (6-6, 2020) scored in double-digits for SHP with 13 and 11 points, respectively. It was the Wolfpack’s first appearance in the state tournament in school history. However SHP struggled as a team, shooting just 32 percent from the field (15 of 47), including 2 of 17 from downtown. “It was not the outcome we wanted but we definitely left our mark [this season],” coach Colin Campbell said. Campbell said Dibwa will be playing travel basketball for Urban DFW Elite on the adidas circuit and is getting looks from FIU, Cal State Bakersfield, New Mexico State, FAU and FGCU. Guard Jose-Luis Benitez has earned an offer from Albany State.
Tyreke McElwain (St. John Paul II)
The 5-11 2020 guard, who is still looking for his first scholarship offer, had 17 points, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. McElwain and Co. held First Baptist to 14 points in the second hall — 8 in the third quarter and 6 in the fourth. “I feel like our offense doesn’t go without our defense,” McElwain said.
Allan Jeanne-Rose, Chosen Levarity (St. John Paul II)
Jeanne-Rose, a versatile 6-7 senior, added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Jeanne-Rose said he is getting interest from Troy, FAMU and a couple junior colleges. Levarity (6-5, 2019) had 9 points and 10 rebounds. St. John Paul opened in Tallahassee in 2001. This is the program’s first trip to the state tournament.
Preston Urbancic (First Baptist)
The 6-2 senior led the way (13 points, 7 rebounds) on a tough day all around for First Baptist. The Lions connected on just 15 of 46 shots vs. St. John Paul’s zone defense, including 4 of 20 from deep.
