Continue ReadingU-D Jesuit and Grosse Pointe North battled for an opportunity to head to the quarterfinal round of the Division 1 boys basketball tournament March 7 at Southfield A&T. With the Cubs opening the first quarter up 21-2, they cruised to a win, knocking off the Norsemen by a final of 71-41. Here are ten of the best players I saw in the game.
Daniel Friday (Jesuit)
He didn’t have his best game, but he was still effective, collecting 9 points and grabbing four rebounds. He’s great at using his athleticism to free himself, and he’s a big reason for Jesuit’s success this season.
Caleb Hunter (Jesuit)
He didn’t start the game, but that didn’t stop Hunter from making an impact. He knocked down four 3-pointers and made the Norsemen pay for leaving him open. He’s a solid bench piece for the Cubs and a player that makes Jesuit one of the best teams in the state.
Julian Dozier (Jesuit)
Dozier really didn’t get going on offense until the second half, where he scored 9 of his 12 points. In the first half, he was playing full court defense and passing to his teammates. He’s a great on-ball defender that should make opposing guards nervous.
Troy Herd (Grosse Pointe North)
Herd was the Norsemen’s best player by far in this game. He collected 14 points and grabbed six rebounds from the point guard spot. He has tremendous composure, and I love the way he controls the game. Colleges should be giving him more of a look.
J.T. Morgan (Jesuit)
Morgan was the spark Jesuit was looking for in the first half, as he scored 8 of his 10 points in the first 16 minutes. He was efficient around the basket and should continue seeing more looks.
Ryan Webb (Grosse Pointe North)
Webb finished the game with 5 points and six rebounds, but I was impressed with his defense throughout the game. North played zone, but he was the big man in the middle having to battle with Jesuit’s Jalen Thomas, who is one of the top players in the state. He held his own and made life hard for the Cubs’ big man.
Jalen Thomas (Jesuit)
Thomas didn’t do much in this game. He finished with 4 points and eight rebounds. The North zone really hurt his production, as Jesuit couldn’t get him the ball on the block, but he was still able to grab a handful of rebounds and limit North’s second chance opportunities.
Joe Ayrault (Grosse Pointe North)
Ayrault was another guy who had to play big in this game, and he was able to finish with 6 points and five rebounds. He struggled from the outside but had some nice drives to the basket to make up for it.
Joey Rheaume (Grosse Pointe North)
He didn’t do much on offense, scoring just two points, but his ability to grab rebounds was a huge lift for the Norsemen. In the game, he collected eight rebounds, which led the team. He’s a scrappy player with a huge motor.
Jordan Shepherd (Grosse Pointe North)
North is filled with seniors, but Shepherd is just a sophomore, and he got valuable game experience against the Cubs. He finished with 4 points and three rebounds. He will likely be running the point next season, and I like his playmaking ability.
