Ben Smith should embrace the post
Smith was really effective in the post against Ed Memorial. At 6’5, he is really bouncy and has good footwork down there. SF should have went to him in the post more.
Part of that is Smith’s fault though. Often times a player who is recruited at a high level because of their potential on the perimeter at the next level shy away from the post in high school.
Smith should embrace his skill in the post which will help him at the next level as teams are switching on defense more and more.
Overall, he played a good game and he will have bright future at the college level.
Memorial won the battle in the halfcourt
Santa Fe didn’t want this to become a half court grind it out type of game and that’s what it became later on in the 4th.
Memorial executed what they wanted to get done on most possessions and it showed down the stretch.
You could feel the game change after Memorial ran three straight plays for the freshmen big man JV Seat and he was 3/3.
Donovan Vickers was tough to stop getting down hill
Vickers did a great job of putting pressure on the Memorial defense.
The lefty had his foot on the petal most of the game and it led to positive results. He found ways to get two feet in the paint and he showed off a variety of ways of scoring down there.
Although he was apart of some unfortunate turnovers down the stretch, Vickers has nothing to hang his head about.
Drew Tennial was clutch at the charity stripe
Memorial fans were vocal with their disappointment in their team’s FT shooting throughout the game.
Their usual aces at the line were struggling and you could tell the frustration was growing.
Then late in the fourth quarter, Tennial found himself at the line twice with under 30 seconds left in the game and he hit 4 of 4 which gave Memotial the lead and sealed their ticket to the State tournament.
Memorial can use this EDLAM matchup to get on a run to a gold ball
There haven’t been many instances where one of the best high school rivalries in the state the last decade would decide which team would head to the state tournament.
The stakes were already high but to add a town rivalry to the mix made it even more interesting.
Memorial walked away with the victory and they now have the opportunity to use this boost to create some momentum for themselves heading to Tulsa.
