Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several senior guards who raised their profile with their performance at the state tournament in Wichita.
3-Ontario Bingley, 5’9, G, 2019, Shawnee Mission South
A do-everything point guard with good handles and a nose for openings. He runs full speed and likes to push the tempo and create opportunities through his misdirection and hesitation. Bingley can score, and did, but his calling card was defensive stops and looking to create openings for his teammates.
21-Samuel Caldwell, 6’2, G, 2019, Shawnee Mission South
Caldwell made a splash as a spot-up shooter and important ball handler. He has good height and jumps out to defend the ball at the top of the key. He also looked to rebound, set screens and pass ahead during the transition game.
2-Savian Edwards, 5’11, G, 2019, Washburn Rural
Edwards brings terrific energy on both ends of the floor. He’s quick and extremely tough and jumps well for his size. He moves well off the ball and can handle tough pressure. He’s also a terrific defender on the ball. He pressures the ball handler throughout the game and can poke away the ball and cause them to rush plays. Edwards also showed terrific hands on offense and brought toughness and leadership to the floor.
14-Jack Hungerford, 6’0, G, 2019, Blue Valley Northwest
A hungry defender who moves well off screens and climbs his way out of traps. He plays well off the ball and can move constantly without slowing down. He brings an edge to him on the floor and he plays bigger than his listed height. A player who muscles his way to the basket and finishes tough shots.
1-Santos Ruiz, 5’7, G, 2019, Kansas City JC Harmon
A bouncy player who moves well and is good at creating enough room to make over-the-head passes and get his shot off against much taller opponents. He weaves in and out of coverage and plays big for his size. A guy who knows his game and earns his stripes while on the floor.
