Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several senior forwards who raised their profile with their performance at the state tournament in Wichita.
34-Drew Bortz, 6’1, F, 2020, Washburn Rural
Bortz sets good screens and rolls to the basket. He showed he can score when he has an open look and rebounds well on the offensive side of the ball. He doesn’t give up the ball and doesn’t throw it away or make poor decisions.
12-Brett Chapple, 6’5, PF, 2019, Lawrence
A strong, physical power forward who has a great feel for the block and can also step out and play some as a wing. He’s a unique player with and edge to him. He brings power and intensity and can force his way inside and score well off the glass.
20-Evan Hickman, 6’4, G/F, 2019, Shawnee Mission South
A composed, pass-inside player who runs the floor and looks for easy buckets in transition. He dazzled several times with his improvisation, a player who moves well and sells fakes and finishes off-balance at the rim. He has good size for a guard position but saw time as a forward on defense.
35-Chauncy Keys, 6’3, F, 2021, Kansas City JC Harmon
Keys played his best a few feet from the basket. He is good at blocking shots and looking to protect the basket any way he can. He has improved his footwork and is getting more confident with his mid-range pull up jumper. An emotional player who likes to compete.
15-Ryan Stacey, 6’2, G/F, 2019, Lawrence Free State
Stacey made several promising plays in which he showcased a strong floor presence, an eye for openings and a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He goes after loose balls and is a good rebounder for his size and position. He can shoot from the corner 3-spot and runs baseline looking for a back door basket.
