Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several performers who raised their profile with their performance at the state tournament in Emporia.
Tyler Clairborne, 6’3, G, 2022, St. James Academy
Clairborne is a talented young guard with long term upside and potential. He has good size at 6’3 for a guard and a well-rounded skill set, able to handle the ball, attack off the bounce and create offense. He got some varsity run this season for the Thunder and with a large senior class set to graduate, Clairborne figures to be a key figure at St. James going forward.
Gavyn Elkamil, 6’5, G, 2020, Pittsburg
Elkamil has earned a reputation as one of the state’s better juniors and has a well-rounded skill set and all-around offensive game. He has good size and a strong frame, and the ability to create offense and score in a variety of ways. He is a solid ball handler who can play on or off the ball and is a standout perimeter shooter.
Tanner Mans, 6’5, G/F, 2020, Bishop Carroll
Mans had a terrific tournament for Bishop Carroll and closed out his junior year by playing some of his best basketball of the season. He scored 12, 15 and 18 points in three games in Emporia, went 5 for 7 from 3-point range and played an all-around game. Known for his outside shooting and ability to play off the ball, Mans spent much of the weekend handling the ball, showing an improved handle and helped the Eagles get into its offense.
Jack Moellers, 6’1, G, 2020, St. James Academy
One of the state’s premier outside shooters, Moellers went for 21 points on seven 3-pointers in the Thunder quarterfinal loss to Maize on Thursday. He spent much of the contest matched up with Maize 2019 standout guard Caleb Grill and had some good moments at both ends of the floor. Moellers has a strong, physical frame and has a quick shooting release and is willing to shoot it from all over the court and well beyond the arc.
Shomari Parnell, 6’1, G, 2020, Andover Central
Parnell is a talented athlete with a terrific combination of size, speed, athleticism and an all-around game. He is a competitor at the defensive end of the court who can lock up opposing guards, gets on the defensive boards and likes to push the tempo in transition. He gets to the basket well off the bounce and is a creative finisher in traffic.
