Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several of the most underrated performers at the state tournament in Wichita.
5-Nathan Burger, 6’3, G, 2019, Blue Valley Northwest
Burger brings good size to the floor and determination and a hard work ethic off the bench. He is a strong competitor on both ends of the floor and puts as much energy on defense as he does on offense. He shoots well, looks to make quick passes and rebounds some and gets back on defense.
23-Micah Jaques, 6’1, G, 2020, Wichita-Southeast
A scoring guard who moves inside to get the defense thinking then pops outside to catch and shoot. He has a great release and is confident shooting with little space. He likes to top of the key but also shoots a high percentage shot from the wing. Jaques is also a solid defensive rebounder and plays big when he switches off at the post.
Mason Myers, 6’1, F, 2019, Olathe North
Another physical presence on the floor who can handle the ball and play big inside. He doesn’t have height or length of other post players but he uses his strength and fight to get on the board, find space in coverage and block out his opponents and secure rebounds on both ends.
23-Kennedy Rater, 6’1, G, 2019, Shawnee Mission South
A good ball handler and set-up scorer. He has a soft touch from the wing sot and can move with and without the ball in his hands. He’s a team leader and is vocal in their success on both ends. Rater looks to push the tempo and can score on the move as well.
5-Elijah Williams, 6’1, G, 2019, Olathe North
A physical presence on the ball who slides down to defend the post. He has great thickness and can set solid screens and roll off the ball well. He did well against Jack Chapman and Christian Braun, he kept with their speed and used his body to stay close and went for rebounds when the ball went up.
33-Averill Yarbrough, 6’3, F, 2019, Wichita-Southeast
An important post player who goes after rebounds, loose balls and can get a hook shot off against a taller defender. Yarbrough provided great energy and a good eye for his team’s defense. He sets his feet and finds a man when he’s looking to rebound.
