Lake Clifton got things started by winning a thriller against Frederick Douglass (PG) by a final score of 58-56. Southern Garrett depended on their outside shooting to help get passed a gritty Crisfield team 66-52.
Here are standouts from the two match-ups:
Armon Harried | Lake Clifton ‘19
Harried had arguably the most impressive individual performance we have seen thus far in final four play. The 6-foot-4 guard finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Harried attacked the basket relentlessly off the dribble and finished consistently. He sparked some of these close looks at the basket defensively by jumping passing lanes, which lead to fast breaks and quick scores.
Mike Gray | Lake Clifton ‘20
Gray got off to a slow start, but had a strong second quarter by scoring 11 of his 21 points. Gray had a number bullish drives to the rim and finished through contact. Despite being one of the shortest players on the floor at 5-foot-11, Gray grabbed eight rebounds, five of which came offensively. He plays with immense toughness and is aggressive defensively. His aggression unfortunately resulted into him fouling out of the game with less than two minutes left, but Lake Clifton was still able to come out with the win.
Kaylen Vines | Frederick Douglass ‘19
Vines had a slow start to this game, but came up big by scoring 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. Most of Vines’ buckets came as a result of lay ups around the rim. The 6-foot-3 senior displayed great quickness and impressive athleticism. He struggled to find his shot, but remained efficient by shooting 7-for-12 from the field.
Abdul Samb | Frederick Douglass ‘21
Samb probably played one of his worst games of the season, but late in the game, he helped spark a comeback to give his team a chance to win with less than a minute. The 6-foot-8 sophomore recorded of double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with four blocks. Samb had multiple shot attempts hit just about every part of the rim before missing. The fact that he stayed the course and didn’t lose confidence speaks a lot about Samb as a player.
Cortrey Fontaine | Crisfield ‘20
Fontaine is a long, athletic wing with a nice motor and it was on display all throughout the game. In 19 minutes, the 6-foot-5 junior finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Although in some instances his aggressiveness defensively created plays for his team, it cost him with five fouls.
Justin Cohen | Crisfield ‘19
Cohen has great size at 6-foot-4. He uses his big frame to get position inside, but also possess ability to step out to 15 feet or even the three-point line and knock down shots. Cohen led the Crabbers with 20 points, six rebounds four assists and a block.
Tyler Rodeheaver | Southern Garrett ’19
Rodeheaver continued the scoring onslaught that he has been on all season by leading the Rams with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Rodeheaver is a pure shooter that can get his shot off quickly. At 6-foot-3, he has decent size to shoot over smaller guards. Defensively, he showed toughness by taking on the much bigger and stronger Cohen, but Rodeheaver did a nice job of not allowing Cohen to get too comfortable by taking a couple of charges while being posted up.
Dalton Wiles | South Garrett ’19
Wiles didn’t take long to earn everyone’s respect. At 5-foot-8 and extremely shifty, Wiles was able to create his own shots and open up teammates by getting into the paint. He displayed high basketball IQ on both ends and despite his size, played with toughness against a very physical Crisfield squad. Wiles stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.
