Southwest Guilford (32-0) 67, Burlington Williams (27-4) 60
Southwest Guilford completed its undefeated season with a hard-fought 67-60 win over the Burlington Williams Bulldogs. It wasn’t easy as most had thought for the Cowboys, but Coach Guy Shaver’s team persevered. After all, Southwest had dismantled the two-time defending 3A state Champion, Cox Mill, by thirty points.
Southwest overcame an early 10-4 deficit, with a 7-0 run to take an 11-10 lead, but Williams scored the next four points to take a 14-11 lead. The Bulldogs then led 16-13, but Keyshaun Langley hit a buzzer beating three pointer, from deep, to knot the score at 16 at quarter’s end.
Langley scored nine points in the second quarter to help Southwest take a 31-28 lead in half time. Kobe’s trey gave the Cowboys a six point lead in the third quarter. A little later, brother Keyshaun Langley’s three-pointer extended Southwest’s lead to 10 points. Southwest had that 10-point lead after three quarters at 45-35.
Southwest built up to a 17 point lead in the fourth, but the Bulldogs wouldn’t go away and fought to the end for the 67-60 win to take the 3A State Championship and complete their undefeated 32-0 season.
My Championship Game MVP, Keyshaun Langley and 6-6 210 forward, Joel Pettiford led the Cowboys with 18 points each.
Joel PettifordCam Thompson added 10 points and Kobe Langley, who along with brother Keyshaun, has signed to play at UNC-Greensboro, added nine points, Jay’den Turner added eight points.
Heavy on the Southwest school and community’s minds is the fact that a member of their family, remains hospitalized after a terrible fall in the 3A West Region Championship Game. Christian Martin, a 6-3 senior and a Division One Prospect, averaged about 13 points and five rebounds this year. our prayers go out to Christian, who is not only a good player and and a real student athlete, he is a fine young man.
Nasir Johnson, Coach Tommy Cole’s outstanding senior guard, led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Rashaud Alston, the team’s amazing 6-0 200, center added 16 points. Alston, a senior averaged 13 points and over 10 rebounds per game this year.
Kennedy Miles and Tamari Graves gave Williams four double figure scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Congratulations are due to Coach Tommy Cole and to his Bulldogs, who played their hearts out, until the bitter end, as an excellent season came to an end.
