Mitchell Goodbary (1), SF Christian senior forward. Goodbary did some of everything moving his team on to the semis. There was the two threes he hit, the several deflections on defense, he brought the ball up times as the muscle point, made 11 of 15 foul shots, grabbed a dozen boards, blocked a pair of shots, dished out three assists, and put the game away late with the short touch and foul shots. Scored 31.
Cooper Cornemann (2), Yankton junior guard. Cooper was maybe the story of the first day of the tournament. His shooting explosion led Yankton a massive second half run that a runaway 62-41 victory. Cooper hit four triples and knocked out seven foul shots for a Class AA day high of 29 points. Add in an aggressive defensive rebounding effort from the guard spot (nine points) and you had an MVP who was better than the best junior and sophomore in the state (on this day!).
Sawyer Schultz (3), Bridgewater-Emery senior guard. In a one point victory Schultz not only took control as a scorer (put up 25 on 10 of 21 attempts) but also ended several Timber Lake possessions with an aggressive approach as a defensive rebounder. Sawyer’s 11 boards gave him a clutch double-double moving Bridgewater-Emery on to the semi-finals vs Clark-Willow Lake.
Justin Hohn (4), Tea Area senior guard. Another player that did a lot of everything was Justin Hohn. Hohn scored his 19 points on 17 shots to contribute to the scoring column but more importantly he put the ball on the hands of teammates where they could comfortably catch and complete possessions. The team plays in a rhythm because of Justin. He also had seven steals and seven boards.
Brodie Sherman (5), Viborg-Hurley senior guard. Brodie led the Cougars to an 8 seed over the one seed victory scoring 31 points with three assists.
Noah Freidel (6), Tea Area senior wing. Tea Area put together a double figure lead and never really looked back. Noah’s four threes and 25 points overall plus six rebounds helped build that comfort.
Brayden PayPay (7), Timber Lake senior guard. In a one point heartbreaker loss to B-E, PayPay made half of his 18 shot attempts including three treys scoring 25 points.
Akoi Akoi (8), SF O’Gorman junior forward. A big reason that O’Gorman cruised past Roosevelt was the inside dominance of Akoi. Before sitting down up big Akoi made 6 of 9 field goals plus hauled in ten boards for a 13/10 double-double. Add in four blocks and it’s a strong day.
Quincy Ihnen (9), Lennox senior guard. In a 48-40 win Ihnen was efficient with 17 points on nine shots that included a pair of threes (and five of six foul shots). Throw in four boards and three assists as well.
Kobe Busch (10), Huron junior forward. I realize that Huron lost big and Busch had half two turnovers but scoring your team’s first 17 points and having 21 in the state tournament on 8 of 12 shooting is in need of mention.
