Tyler Newsom simply rolled with the punches. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound wing waited along with everyone else and then turned up his game in the post-season. The senior helped Pendleton reach the state tournament and while the Buckaroos ended up going two and out, it was a successful final high school campaign for him.
“I feel like it went pretty good besides the snow,” Newton said, referencing the snowstorm. “Everything went perfect I feel like. My jumpshot really improved and I’m now more outside-in – I was inside-out last year. My guard skills got way better.”
While Pendleton was unable to win a game at state, you certainly couldn’t put it on Newsom. In the first contest against Wilsonville, he scored more than half of his team’s points with 21 out of 40, and in the team’s second loss against Crater, Newsom put up 31 points – often driving to the basket and hitting some high arching shots over Crater star Nathan Bittle who finished the game with ten blocked shots. Newsom’s play helped earn him Second Team All-Tournament honors.
What’s next for Newton is the college level and so far the interest has been mainly from NWAC programs with Blue Mountain, Clark, Mt Hood, and Linn-Benton being the main ones he’s hearing from at the moment. Newton had previously “I’m planning on going to community college for two years and see where I can go from there.”
Newton will try and figure things out over the next couple of months when it comes to his future. While his time at Pendleton is done, he’s excited for what’s ahead for his school. “We’ve got a good shot at it next year as we’re all young,” Newton said. “There are only two seniors so they’ve got a good shot.”
