Continue Reading2021 guard Willie Jones was superb during his sophomore season as Seffner Christian took Westminster to the wire in the Class 4A state final.
The Crusaders (25-7) fell to 3-peat champions Westminster 77-73 earlier this month in a back and forth matchup. Jones had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the state final and 23 points in the semifinal win previously over Riviera Prep. He shot 15-of-30 in the two games in Lakeland.
Jones called his sophomore season a great experience. A 6’5″, 183-pounder, he transferred over from Spoto.
“Me being a quiet to myself kind of person has really made me become more vocal more open and my collaboration with the Seffner family is just wonderful. My mom always told me to continue to be me and everything else will fall in place and with the support of the Seffner family that’s exactly what’s happening.
The rising junior said he made the mover to Seffner Christian to be in a better environment.
“By faith, I think Seffner chose me I didn’t choose them and they have made me feel at home since day one me,” Jones told Prep Hoops. “The basketball team is like a brotherhood once we felt each other chemistry there was no holding us back I love those guys and I think the future is bright for all of us if we just keep our faith and work hard.
…”As a team, I think we’re teaching each other growth how to better ourselves that is what happens when you have a group of people with different personalities.”
This summer, Jones will play with Team Asset. He played for Henson Select last AAU season and called it a great experience.
Earning his first offer earlier this month from USF, Jones said he just wants to make his mom proud. He reminisced about the look on her face after he got that offer and said it was just amazing.
“I know if I keep up the hard work there’s more to come. I’m a team player and if I can make something happen so my teammates can score I’m gonna do it but there is also room for improvement. I know I got a lot to learn but I’m staying focused, definitely academically.
…”Also, not giving up because that’s not an option. Hard work pays off that’s my motto.”
Jones is a very solid athlete and one that has good awareness near the rim, a reliable shooter and one that has room to continue to get stronger. He should be able to get better for a state contending team this upcoming fall.
